AHHHHH!!! DARKMOON!!!!
Old Blue, I've been here damn near since the beginning. I don't click on the banners, hypertext, or the "ads by Google" that, with the Alfred Newman "poster", are located in two places that are within inches of each other as Newman is the last poster on every post unless you're in Darkmoon apparently and that will probably change soon. It's not very often that my posts are meanless bantering or just trying to get my post count up. I also don't attempt to reply to a post that I don't feel I'm qualified to reply to. I know quite a bit, but I know I don't know everything, so most of my 2600 some odd posts are replies to someone requiring knowledge that I feel I might be able to enlighten them with, so I feel most qualified of those complaining, to gripe about the ads. I realize the bandwidth doesn't come free, and I also realize that the site uses a lot and is constantly upgrading servers and such. I also realize that StangNet has a shop, has purchased company project vehicles, and has employees, that although, support the upkeep of the website, also suck resources from it as well. What I'm worried about is Mike and company overextending themselves on this and the site going away. To me, this plastering of ads is just a sign of times to come if care is not taken.
eliquently spoken, and i can see your gripes, and share the disdain for commercial advertizing. but i think you are being too doomsday-ish and far too black and white here.
There and things in life that people dont like, in your homes, neighborhoods, TV's, and work places. Some of these things we do not like are facts of life, and some are not. often we can do things to change the latter of those two, but a lot of times we can't. if there is a good program on TV and i get tired of too many commercial breaks, or annoying commercials i dont like, i either get up till the break is over. or mute the tube until my show is back on.
I don't know a single person that enjoys commercials, but that doesn't mean they don't understand why they are there. do we need all those commercials, nope, do the networks? probably not. they will get as much advertizer dollars as they can squeeze. but have you ever seen the masses refusing to watch their favorite programms because they dont like all those annying adds about femanine itching/odor, men with impotencse that will be supermen in all things they do with the gulp of a single pill, or how you can get cash now if you stubbed your tow at the work place now now now? Im sure some do, but most dont and wont.
I can see in this very thread that some people agree with you. but i would say that more than 90% will likely just ignore the adds and continue reading and posting skipping over what they dont want to read, just like you would do in a "People Magazine".
So, in me example, you may see that like TV, people will grumble about the acommercials, but wont stop watching, or reading in this case.
Sure it sucks, but it isnt going to go away. Rest assured if it reaches the proportions you predict. the moderators of this forum will take notice and quickly change things if numbers start to dwindle. You think people who are so good at pinching pennys and squeezing every cent out of a commodoty wont notice when to pull back to save a cash cow from going belly up? they likey will know how far to go.
i guess people can leave to get away from the adds that bother them. or leave to protest their overabundance. but i think that you would be missing out on the good that still remains here (baby in the dirty bathwater).
anyways, thats my story and im stickin to it! =P
