"P" heads with oversized valves? worth it?

hey guys, a local stanger is selling some gt40p heads with 2.02/1.60 valves and high performance hardware. these heads were put together buy a local shop he works at. no port work , just a little clean up. the heads have 1000 miles and are being sold for 200 bucks...i know the oversized valves are not really worth it on a p head but do you guys think these heads are worth it? he also said he didint have any p/v clearance with these heads on a 302...would i clear with a cam with a 512/537 lift? thanks in advance

I have always heard large valves in oem iron heads are not all that effective.

The small gain does not justify the cost kinda thing.

I'm talking NA ... not forced induction.

Well they did a valve job and that alone is a good thing. Assuming they did good bowl work, it shouldn't hurt for sure. When I had my valve job done, he used 1.94/1.56 valves IIRC. They cleared with .54/.54 lift and 4 degree advance.

For $200, I would think that you cvan't go wrong. Depending on the source of the valves, they alone may be worth the money.

Just some interesting reading on this topic... I'd say for 200 bones you can't miss. With stock valves this would still be a good deal imo.

I have never heard of a 2.02 valve fitting a stock 302 bott. that was not a Trick Flow head.

IMHO from what I have read, been told, seen. The P head with that bigger valve will prob. kill the voloc. of the air flow. Remember the smaller valves in the P head over the reg. gt40 is were they pick up a good bit of the flow. If you go and dump a larger valve on them its going to kill that. Also the bowl area cannot support a 2.02 valve as it cannot be opend' up enough to get the full use out of the larger valve. So if they did manage to get a 2.02 valve in there ,from what I have seen, heard, been told it takes ALOT of work, it would not be a preatty big bill.

In the end I think this is a note of bigger is not always better, and someone learned this the hard way and is dumping them cheap. OR has no idea what is really done to the heads.

Sorry but I wouldnt do it.

Would you please elaborate on these size valves being used in the p or even E7 heads.

I did not think it was possible to fit them in an oem iron head
hence
My reason for wanting you to share your more knowledgeable input.

I'm with blksn955.o on this one. Using heads with a 2.02 intake valve and an inline valve setup will probably have PTV clearance issues. I'd take a pass, unless you can possibly turn them around for a profit.

Shrouding!! shrouding.....
UNless a pro shop opended the chambers to un shroud the 2.02's then at least .250 to .375 of the valve will have a shrouding issue and actually cut the flow down from what is expected!! the chambers being one and the Cylinder being the other!! FYI the BOSS 302 ( different valve angles ect) had the top of the cylinder NOTCHED just because of shrouding and the physical closeness of the 2.19 to the cylinder wall. ALSO most FORD OEM pistons are cut for the 1.85 intake size ( I have seen the 1.90 bump p/v) SOOooo... if you want to run those.. open the chambers and unshroud, and you will most likely need to at least open up the stock notched in the stock pistons!! and IF the valve are in there... I guess you CAN do it!! LOL Just bigger isnt better.. no mater what she says!!
