I was just wondering if anyone else is having the problem with new paint cracking on the stock urethane bumpers, like the blue 76 Cobra on ebay we've been talking about in the other thread, mentioned in his ad.

I will need to get both bumpers, and if it's common for new paint to just crack again on the factory bumpers I would have to start looking at the fiberglass ones.

The urethane bumpers have to be painted with flexable paint. You can't paint the bumpers with the same paint you paint the car with. More than likely someone painted that car and didn't change paint or add flexative for painting the bumpers.

I got my fiberglass bumpers from MAS Racing Products. They had the cracks already molded in. The molds were obviously taken from cracked urethane bumpers. But hey, the price was right.

Even with the original paintjob the bumpers tended to crack over time. I suspect the urethane expands and contracts quite a bit. Push-starting your buddy's Monza doesn't help either.

What everyone else said, plus the original bumpers probably had cracks in them so what happens is when you paint over them the bumper just flexes in the cracked portion and your new paint cracks as well.

LOL I had to edit cause I wrote "plus the original bumpers probably had crack in them" bwah ha ha funny typo but I try to proof all my posts.

The ONLY solution I have found for this issue is a product called Standohyd stone chip primer.

Made by Standox, it is a water-based product that can be applied up to 12 mils thick, is resiliant, and will effectively fill/bridge small cracks in the OE bumper covers. It will also alleviate the stone chipping on the front bumper, valance, and spoilers.

It's not cheap, nor easy to find, but it does work. PITA to sand as well, but it does work. I used it on the last II I built, works great.

Sorry Jon, it goes under the paint.
