Paint Job

So I finally got started on my paint job last week. I have the back half of my stang stripped to metal and I am currently applying body filler to the dents and my quarter panel repairs.

I know you guys are going to chastise me for it but I used por 15 and their body filler, resto grip, to patch the holes in the rear quarters. I'm hoping the repair well at least give me two years of rust and crack free crusing.

I clearly don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to painting a car, but I'm hoping my paint rig job will look pretty good and last until I can afford to pay a profesional to do it.

definitely post pics. did you go to the big mustang show today? there were a few nice cars but the turnout wasn't what i expected it to be.

Dang I didn't know there was a mustang show today. Crap! I have spent most of the day spreading body filler on my car. It sucks cuz I know I'm going to be sanding nearly all of it off.

yeah man, sanding off the bondo is fun stuff huh? don't worry about missing the car show much, it really wasn't all that great. there were maybe a hundred cars and well over half of them weren't even fords. there were really only a couple big bodies there, of course one was a chalkmark resto yellow boss 351. i can't even remember what the other one was

Yeah it sounds like it was pretty kick. I'll have to go to the next show for sure.

That would be cool. I'm hoping to mine done before next spring so I can enjoy driving around with the top down again even if it takes 50 bucks to filler up. I've still got a lot to do though. My tranny and steering need a rebuild for sure and I need to look at my engine as well. I've got a squeak and or oil leak out of the front seal that is driving me crazy. Really I want to take the stang out autocrossing, boy is that a blast.

i see you've discovered that sanding bondo is a whole lot easier when the fiance is doing it

I was thinking about getting a new front drivers side fender due to this huge rust hole. Then I looked at the following

are you gona do an acrylic enamel or base coat/clear coat paint?

Um, I think it was called something urethane and it wasn't a base/clear paint. I'll have to talk with my paint supply guy again. All I know for sure is that I've got a lot more sanding to do. The rear is almost straight. I figure another 5 hours of elbow grease should make it as close to perfect as I can get it.

The fenders prouced and sold through CJ pony parts were of high quality and only required very slight clearancing around the front fender running light tabs. I bought a PS fender and was really happy with it.

i was in your shoes about 2 years ago. Here is the best advise I can give you, first make friends with your local paint shop, they can give you good pointers!! and how to fix your ooppps!! and awe shoots! second, prep is truely 90% of it, make your booth clean, and I mean clean, if you can eat off of it, then its getting close. lastly, contrast your primer and your paint. I know this sounds simple, but the pros know what they are doing, for some of us this is an easy oversight, I sprayed silver on top of grey, and even the paint shop guys over looked it.... good luck!!! and let us see how it goes!!

My estimate of 5 hours to finish the rear panels was way off. I figure I've put in another 10 and still have at least two more to go.

My arms are going to be as big as Popeye's by the time I get finished. Hey, I wonder if a can of spinich would help.

I don't want to, but I am going to force myself to do the door jams. Ugh, I don't want to take off the doors, but I recon that's going to be the easiest way to get that area sprayed.

Do you think I should replace my hinges while I'm at it? truthfully they are in good shape, but they have been on the car since it came from the factory.

The paint booth, now that is going to be a challange. I was going to build one in my backyard. I'd do it in the garage except the blower and vent for the airconditioner and heater are in there. We'd all be high for a week if I painted the car in there.
