painting Shelby Stripes

I just painted my 66 and want to add the Shelby Lemans stripes. Should I scuff the base color roughly where I will be painting, tape, paint and then wet sand the whole car or should I tape, scuff only where taped, paint and then wet sand?

what kinda paint did the car get painted with? (single stage, basecoat/clearcoat a.k.a bc/cc) and if it is bc/cc have you sprayed the cc on yet?

It is a single stage, acrylic enamel, made by PPG.

Just an FYI....Do you have a Tony Branda catalog? There is a diagram in the back of the catalog to show the EXACT measurements for the stripes.

If you just painted the car, the answer you're looking for should be on the paint can. If not, talk to your paint supplier (and let us know what is recommended). I suspect, if the paint is less than a month old and you've done nothing to it, you can paint the stripes directly on top of your existing paint without scuffing anything. Be sure to remove the tape as soon as the paint flashes to avoid jagged edges.

The paint spec. sheet says it can be recoated after 4 hrs. (or 40 minutes if it's baked). The paint supplier reccomended scuffing w/ 1500 (which will be done anyway, when I wetsand the car). My question is really specific to taping of the car. Since it's just 1500 and the area's not getting striped will get wet-sanded with the 1500 anyway, should I scuff before or after it's taped? Is there risk for damaging the tape (either wearing it down to where it might bleed through or somehow making the adhesive more aggresive) if it's sanded after taping?

Tape, the scuff carefully avoiding touching the tape, but get as close as you can. Once painted, then carefully color sand the entire car.

For the sake of getting the best paint stripe adhesion possible (which is especially important at the tape/stripe edge), I would wetsand first. Sanding slightly beyond the area to be taped.
