i seriously doubt the spring can pop out. I had to pry mine out with a crowbar.... but yes use the jack to lower it slowly only because the control arm under full stress could hurt ya if left unchecked.
just jack up the car, rest it on stands, put a jack under the control arm, just slightly raise the arm with the jack, remove the CC bolts, remove the top bolt for the sway bars tie rods, and remove the brake caliper (you will need to use a large C clamp to compres the calipers piston a lil to make removal easier), then just lower the arm slowly, and hold the shock as it will want to flop around without guidance.
