Performance mods 101

Ok.. I was just wondering what mods I can get relatively cheap (1k and under) for a 03 GT that are painless. By painless I mean.. I won't encounter major screw ups if I eff it up trying to put it on.. or I wont be paying a mechanic with my first born if I wimp out on installing myself. - - I hear alot about the 4.30 gears.. are they expensive? .. and is that a single upgrade.. or do you need to like replace 8 other things along with it. I appreciate all answers, comments, and opinions.. Im new at mods and just wanna do it right.. Thanks guys (and the 2 girls who surf this site).

From what I've come across.
Gears: $150-$200 for parts $200-$300 to have installed.

Headers: $140 (cheap crap)- $700 (long tube ceramic coated, and company name) install fee - depends on what the shop wants to charge. Some won't do it since its not a factory replacement.

X-Pipe: $150-$450(with cats) install fees again varies to much

Throttlebody & Plenum: $360-$1000+(ported bullit intake assembly)

There are more things that can be done, but this is just a short list of what I've come across. Also these prices will more then likely change by the area.
