being new to mustangs, i just got a 94 gt and am curious about the biggest bang for my buck on performance.

It's all about cubic dollars.
How much you wanna spend?

Generally the first mods to a stock car should be getting air in (aftermarket air inlet filter/tubing, aka cold air intake), getting air out (headers, aftermarket exhaust front to back), stiff up the chassis (subframe connectors), and some gears in the rear.

That's the basic stuff to build on, unless you have all the money up front to do everything at once.
If that's the case, get a crate engine and throw a supercharger on it.

all your basic bolt ons like ratio said will be a good starting point. from there the sky is the limit just depends on your budget.

Nitrous kit....install it and you could have an easy 1200hp car with nothing else.....it'd only last for a .7 seconds until some chunk of metal flew threw the hood or out of the oil pan....but you'd still be badazz.

Really though...assuming a limited budget/clean slate/ and properly functioning up to date maintained car.......nitrous kit, KnN/sometype of CAI, catback, pulleys, short throw shifter (assuming 5spd) and gears (you choice fo ratio, popular vote lies between 3.55 and 4.10)

Don't wanna sound like Grandpa, but first and foremost...develop a vision for an end product...and be realistic with yourself. Not many of us are able to dump 10 grand with a call to Summit, and get all the bits a pices we ever wanted...heck not even sure 10g would cover what soem guys have done. Point being, Nitrous may be one of the best bangs for the buck out there, but....in the end shoud you have kept that 3-9 hundred bucks you spent on that NX kit as you're waiting to get together enough dough to gatther the litte bits and pieces (that add up quick) to install your shiny new Kenne Bell...that is going on a stocked headed, custom cammed 270,000 mile, quart a week burning motor, show car paint job, cracked leather seats, with tristars out back one waffle rim out front with the donut on the other side.......know what I mean??

Cylinder heads
Intake manifold
2.5" X or H pipe (catted or not)

These are the best mods for horsepower (besides adding NOS or turbo/supercharger system) to an otherwise stock setup.
Add any one of these or all of these items to a stock engine and you will have more horsepower.

Is the car stock? How much are you looking to spend? For a virtually free hp increase right off the bat, bump the timing to at least 14* and put in some premium gas.

Skip all the bs boltons and go strait for gears....you can spend just as much on CAI's, pulleys ect..ect and your car wont be nearly as fast as it would be with just the addition of gears. Number one best bang for the buck even if its not adding any horse.....

Tires, gears, suspension, nitrous. You can run pretty quick with a fairly stock car and these mods.

a cold air intake? really? seriously?

OP please dont waste your money on a CAI on a stock car.

So you are saying that getting more air into the engine is not a good thing, and not a good base for future mods, as I suggested?

I did not suggest that this be the only mod, but used in conjunction with other mods...

Maybe someone else that knows for sure with these particular cars could straighten me out, but does opening up the air intake tract NOT help these cars? I admit I have not yet had the pleasure of owning a 5.0 EFI car before it was converted to better intake tubing, but other vehicles I have owned benefited tremendously from this mod, even in stock form. My stock Camaro gained almost 15 hp from just a 'lid' and smooth bellow plumbing! (The equivalent of CAI on a Stang.)

I just find it hard to believe such a harsh reaction to the suggestion of getting more air in and out of the engine being a good starting point...

CAI is a waste unless you have an aftermarket plenum, TB, full exhaust, and cams. Even with those mods it's worth at best 10 rwhp, but more likely gives like 3 RWHP.

OP there are much better things to spend your money on unless you're simply trying to attract fish by having something shiney under the hood

To end the debate and give the OP something to actually work with here...

Buying a drop in filter I.e. k&n, green etc etc is your best bang for the buck. The factory air system already takes air from the fender, just the paper filters hinder performance.
