What is the best source for the "batt" connection on the Pertronix HEI system?

I have fried two modules.

Thanks!

Hm,mm... my pertronix unit had 2 wires.

1 went to the + side of the coil, the other went to the - side.

Been working great for 4 years now. Is your ballast resistor(or resistor wire) in place?

It's the Flame Thrower with coil attached a-la chevy. One wire is supposed to go to a "clean" 12v source that is ignition activated. The switch wire is a resistor and does not work(for long)

I haven't had a problem with mine at all. I will verify tonight where it's hooked up (been a while since that was done) but any 12 volt source should be ok as long as it gives it to you on START and RUN. I will say this....the website Pertronix provides sucks. Love their products but amazed at the lack of documentation on their site. They have had "Coming Soon" under the Downloads section for as long as I can remember.

Follow that wire back to the ignition switch and you should find it splices into non resistor wire before you reach the ignition switch. Tap into it there for your 12V source.

The only way I can think you would burn units up is if you were running 12v to the unit all the time, even with the car off.

The unit will fail if it does not get at least 12v. I had a long conversation the last time it failed with their tech guy. He had me test the voltage drop etc. and determined that it was getting too low a current. I did replace the resistor wire and thought I had hooked it up to a good current but the new one failed.

Rapid, I have been running an original Pertronix with about 8v to it for about 8 years now.

Do you think there is another cause or perhaps I just have had bad modules???

I know the version II needs 12v to operate properly, but version one does not. I have a hard time understanding why less than 12v will cause a module to burn out. Of course, 12v is best for both version I and II.

Thanks for the input. I installed a new module, re-checked my ignition wire and it read 12v. I will carry an extra module and hope for the best.
