Photography

I have recently become intrested in photography. I am mainly wanting to take pictures of cars. I don't know if I should get a digital camera or a film camera. I seen a Cannon Rebel at Walmart for $200, and it was a film camera. I have a digital camera right now but it is junk (Vivitar 3.1MP). Is there anything I can do with this camera to take better pictures. Here is a link to another thread I started with pictures I took of my car. Thanks for any tips. I would love suggestions on if I should go digital or film and what camera to get. Tips on taking great pictures would be awesome as well. Thanks guys!!!

I would go digital just to save money on film and developing costs. A good start is www.dpreview.com - it has TONS of camera reviews, articles, tips, etc. Also, for more product reviews you can checkout www.cnet.com, they always have pretty good reviews

I don't wanna get anything too expensive because I don't have a ton of money and I am just starting out as well. Is something like a Canon PowerShot S3 IS going to be a really good camera that could take magazine worthy shots and be able to keep me satisfied when I start growing and learning more? Thanks

That cobracountry link is pretty good. The key is good composition. Even the most expensive camera won't make up for bad lighting or a poorly planned shot.

Agree on both points. Read through that set of tips, those really do help out.

I would definetly go with a digital camera over a film camera. This gives you plenty of opportunity to practice (and mess up alot of pics) with posing, lighting, flash, etc. My first digital camera was an HP point & shoot that allowed a little bit of manual control. I took about 8,000 photos with that one in about 2 years. Now, I have a Canon Digital Rebel SLR camera. I've had it for right at 2 years now, and I'm up to almost 6,000 photos with that one. When I get to shooting my car (or any subject for that matter), I'm what I consider "click-happy".

I totally agree with you. But a crappy camera can make a picture with all the right things going on turn out bad. I play pool and a cue isn't going to make a crappy player better, it is still a very important part of your game. A better analogy would probably be golf, clubs won't make you Tiger, but Tiger won't shoot with Wal-Mart clubs either, he wouldn't be as good.

So what do you guys think about the Canon PowerShot S3 IS?

If you can afford a digital SLR then go digital, if not don't waste your time trust me. The ability to change shutter speed and aperature is essential; especially with moving or close up shots. If you cant afford the D-SLR then just buy a film camera and develop your skills. If you take to the hobby then invest in a D-SLR so that you can see your pictures and re-shoot on loc assuming u have a lap top. Any point and shoot camera isnt worth your time if your looking to glorify any car.

I just picked up the panasonic fz7. It is WAY more capable than I am. I read all the reviews I could find. I'd actaully suggest the opposite approach though get a good midrange point and shoot and get good at getting "the" shot. then move up.

I have a Nikon cool pix and I'll get my car photos in here in a few minutes. It's digital and takes awesome pics. Gonna be upgrading to a 5 or 6 megapixel by the end of the yaer.

look at a canon rebel xt or a nikon d50 for entry level dslr's

i have a nikon d50 myself because i prefer nikon and already had nikon gear

I have a canon S2 IS and it takes awesome pics. I would highly recomend the S2 or S3. Hear are some pics from my S2.

nice pics, but ya got any to show him that dont have so much post processing? he doesnt sound like the type that will be doing it, and i dont want him to run out and buy a dslr and be pissed when his pics dont turn out like that :)
