Here is a picture of my speedo gear that had only 3000 miles. It is a 23 tooth gear that I changed when I switched from 3.08 to 3.55 rear end gear.

Not really sure. The gear on the output shaft looks fine. I am wondering if the pitch on the 23 tooth gear is not quite right with the origional output shaft gear?

As far as I know, all the speedo gears for the non-stock final drives don't "fit" perfectly. Just depends how lucky you are as to how long they will last. I got another, from a Jeep dealership, and sanded down the knurls slightly. That helped. The second one has lasted a lot longer.

Yeah, mine looked like that too. Still worked well, but looked like crap. One of those things, I suppose. If it weren't so cheap and easy to change I would really be torqued.
You bought one from a Jeep dealership? Do Jeep speedo gears work? Are they better?

Check the chart...it gives you part numbers and everything. I dont know how much better it is, I just got the jeep one because theres a dealership that had them in stock, and I didnt feel like waiting for getting it shipped.

That is exactly why I advise people against reusing the 8 tooth drive gear when I rebuild their transmissions.
Exactly!!
I always tell people that if they have their t-5 out, it doesn't take a whole lot of work to pull the tailhousing off and swap to a 6 or 7 tooth drive gear

I have an '88 that had a 4cyl to V8 swap. Are my chances better to have the 1983-1989 T-5 or the 1990-1995 T-5???
Also if the plug that goes into the sensor had the wires cut what would that effect?

I just pulled my 23 tooth gear and it looked as bad after 3000 miles, freaked me out but I put it back in and it works fine.
If it stops working then I'm going to file the new one down some in the hopes that it lasts longer-the above post sounds like it will.
FYI- when I went the jeep delaer and asked for the 23 tooth gear with the part number parts guy told me its not stocked anymore-anywhere so I got it from a mustang parts place.

Same thing they told me at first. The part number is an older Jeep part number however, they crossed it and it is still available. I picked mine up yesterday. They also said they can get more but they will have to order it. It just requires the part counter to do a little extra work.
