Hey there im a little bit new to lotsa this, i was wondering what pinging was? and how it sounds? im also curious how to adjust my timing, can anyone help me out?

pinging is detonation...it sounds like a bunch of loose bolts rattling in your engine. to adjust your timing you need to mark your balancer where you want it to be times. next you need to unplug the little plug on the wire harness going to the distributor. than you will need to hook up a timing light to the positive and negative battery terminal and hook up the clip to the number 1 cylinder. loosen the distributor hold down a little bit so you can turn the distributor now start the car and aim the timing light at the balancer. turn the distributor until the light flashes at the same time the line you marked on the balancer lines up with the pointer above the balancer. shut the car off and tighten down the distributor. take it for a ride and get on it and if you dont have any pinging youre good to go...and might be able to even advance your timing more. if you get pinging after adjusting the timing...retard the timing back down 1 or 2 degrees. this might sound kind of complicated..but its really not

hmm ok im not pinging then, sometimes when i rev my car up higher, ill hear a whine sounds almost like a fan speeding up or something over my exhaust?? and when u let off it sounds like a popping, do u know what would cause that popping? It sounds kinda cool, but i dont think its right.

I've never heard of a "popping" sound unless it's just your exhaust burbling down or something. The whine is probably the fan. Do you have a flex style metal blade fan? Mine makes a wizz/whine sound.

does the motor still rev smoothly or does it hesitate at all....because if it does you could have a miss. i was missin pretty bad for a little bit and it would pop pretty bad after i reved it up. hard to tell
