Hey all, my engine has been pinging on and off at idle only... it sounds as though it is coming from near the alternator ( I dont think the alternator is bad, been replaced not to long ago). I run 93 octane gas and am stumped, retarding the timing does not help either.. has anyone encountered problems like this?

have you checked your EGR? it should not be open at idle - if the solenoid malfunctions, it will introduce spent gasses at idle - the idle will deteriorate noticably and timing will shoot through the roof.

if you just think it is a bearing in an accessory (not pinging, or preignition or detonation), set a stethoscope or long screwdriver. be really careful, and put your ear to the stethoscope/screwdriver handle while touching different accessories. you can hear what is 'goin on inside' the various accessories. again, be careful.
good luck.

Very unlikely (perhaps impossible) to be detonation at idle. Perhaps valvetrain noise? What are your mods?

I bet it's the tensioner clanking.

I fixed the tensioner awhile back The noise seems to be coming from the alternator (used a screwdriver) but wouldn't it make noise all the time? My car is mostly stock from what I can tell. Previous owner seems to have replaced the mid-pipe, and I have put U/D pulleys and a cold air kit on thus far.

Mine got to where it would ping at about idle speed, not exactly at idle. If I revved the motor up to about 900 or so to get a little more battery charge there would be some pinging. It went away when the new balancer and plugs went in, so I'm not sure which was causing it.
