hey guys I am having some pinging issues....I am running stock timing and 92 octane gasoline...th car has not been tuned in a little while and I am smelling fuel...so I guess maybe some premature ignition is going on what should I do...I was going to take it to my mechanic but I don't wanna pay for a diagnostic and find that I only need a tune up..so should I pay for the diagnostic and then if I just need a tune that is my luck or should I just tune it and if it doesn't solve the problem pay for diagnostic?

have your checked your timing? Do you have a aode. if so does it pinging after you shift. It could be your EGR.

yes not that long ago I checked and set the timing to 10 * and I have a 5 speed...it pings under heavy acceleration in the higher rpms...not immediately after shifting...

Okay heres a list of to do's": replace IAT and ECT sensors, 180* t-stat, 2 bottles of Red Line Water Wetter with 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. About $60.00 worth of stuff there. Inspect the harmonic balancer. Look to see if there is a thin piece of rubber coming out between the inner and outer parts of the balancer. It can slip causing a false reading while setting up timing (this happened to me). With the above actions my stang is now ping free. I have also read that 94-95 mustangs are notorious for pinging with stock cast iron heads and mine was no exception.

ok here this may help with the diagnosing....I did a tune up and that seemed to be to no avail cause I was driving around and heard it ping again afterwards but several hours later after it cooled from the day's high of like 95 down to high 70s low 80s the car ran fine no ping....?????...wtf? Do I need to worry about the t-stat or the IAT? or what?

Have a look at the following thread;

Pinging... Finally Gone !!!

My car gets picky sometimes. It might just have some carbon and crap on the valve. Run some seafoam through the intake, and see if it cleans it out.

wow....ok...I guess the previous owner had never ever replaced the damn spark plug wires...75,000 miles on the same spark plug wires????? what was this guy thinking...they were the factory ones they had 1995 written on them and everything. Well I bought some new wires and put em on this afternoon. Was gonaa be lazy and have a mechanic do it but they quoted me like 250 bucks!!!! so I actually took some initiative and did it myself!..you ever notice that our cars are like the most pain in the *ss to tune...anyone...this morning and afternoon been slamming it all day...no pinging so far so the fingers are crossed!!

DAMN!!! now it only pings when it is over 90 degrees outside but it still pings....when it is under 90 degrees the car runs awesome...but once over 90 pinging returns....ACT sensor gone bad then????

im not great with the SN95's, but that is not uncommon. have you tried upping the octane or kicking timing down a few degrees? as Mo Dingo and other Tucsonan's can tell ya, we would welcome 90*. LOL. on the fox, i run 15* in winter, and have trouble with 12* in summer. and i think the snout on your cars exacerbates the problem.

i would knock a degree or two off and see how it does. you very well may have deposits in the chambers, which artificially raise compression, as well as providing an 'ignitor' for preignition (different than detonation).

good luck.

The ACT for the 94-95 Mustangs is known also as the IAT (Incoming Air Temperature) sensor.

Did you replace the spark plugs/cap/rotor? If the wires were stock, you should definately check the plugs, etc. They may be stock.

If you are poor, you can check the tabs on the cap/rotor for buildup & excessive wear. If they are in good condition, but have a slight buildup on them, you can clean the contacts and reuse the cap/rotor. But if there isn't much metal left, don't reuse them.

After 75k miles of driving, plugs tend to wear out. When my brother bought his old truck, the plugs were factory & barely had any metal left on the electrode or the ground tab.

HISSIN50, you can say that again. Already above 110* here in Tucson. And I just started a big outdoor painting project.

302FordRacer, when it gets hot out, the air coming into the engine is hotter, thus increasing the chance of premature detonation. This happens to me as well. When it's 110 out, I just play nice and keep the revs under 3k

I thought of making a CAI w/ the filter in the fenderwell just to rid myself of detonation. But that will come after I replace my MAF and run a few more cans of SeaFoam.

The heat is your enemy, especially if a lot of humidity goes with it. I occasionally get some part throttle pinging at about 3,000 rpm or so if the humidity is really high. A lot better now with upgraded cooling, mainly the Summit radiator-fights off the heat a lot better than the stocker.

I changed everything; oxygen sensors, IAT, ECT, Fluidyne radiator, even backed the timing to 6 degrees and nothing worked. Our computers are programmed from Ford to run hot to reduce emissions. That kind of heat causes detonation. I'm hoping that the addition of aluminum heads, 180 thermostat, and a chip that my pinging issue will be gone. If that doesn't do it, then I'm going to switch to a A9L and PIH.

product to help clean the combustion chambers to remove carbon build up.

in the old days, we would slowly pour water into the carb (being aware of hydrolock) before plug swaps to steam clean the guts of the motor. kinda the same idea.

Yikes. Sounds like fun! Even water injection scares me.

I have seen people run ATF through a vacuum line with the engine running. Supposedly works, but I can't attest to it. I just bit the bullet and bought the Seafoam.

Too bad, cause it didn't help. I should have just used one of 10 quarts of ATF I have sitting on a shelf

When it gets hot here, my car still runs right at the O in "normal". If it really cool out (50-60*F), it might run inbetween the N and the O. Not much deviation here.

But like your problem, when it's over 85*F, the car will ping. Under that it won't make a peep. Very annoying.

Scott, there are some folks whom dump ATF in the crankcase 300-500 miles before the next oil change. supposedly cleans up varnish and so on (this is not related to removing deposits, but when you mentioned ATF, it struck a chord).

i dont have the guts to run Seafoam type products - there are some horror stories out there (esp with DSM's).

great weather today, eh? awesome!
