Pinning Rocker studs?

I have done it in the past but I would not suggest it with the heads on the engine unless you are extremely carefull about the metal shavings from the drilling. How are you going to press the studs that have pulled out back in place? A hammer is not going to cut it. I don't like the pinning method as it is a cheap bandaid at best. If you have a cam big enough to pull the studs then pony up and spend the time/money to get the screw in studs.

Regardless of helpful advice, I seem to take the easy way out all too often, which comes back to bite me in the @$$ later. And makes me wonder why I didn't listen.
Having said that, I still have wishful thoughts that I can tap the holes for the studs myself, with the heads on the car. I found a tap guide that would assist me. How hard would this be? Or should I just crank out the two days (+ time in machine shop) and $200 it would cost me to pull the heads, take to machine shop, and re-install?

Check with cylinder head shops nearby you, they usually have heads already done. All you have to do is trade yours in and give up some cash. Going the cheap way on this will definetly get you bit in the a$$ sooner or later.

While I am also guilty of looking for the cheap option, there are times when you simply have to bite the buttet and get the job done properly, the first time. This I think is one of them. Besides, the advice you are getting is from members who have "been there....done that".

Take the heads off and have the studs tapped by a cylinder head shop or buy a pair of change over heads if it will save you a couple of $$. It will save you in the long run.
