I was thinking about taping off my paint and sanding down my quarter windows on my stang. They are by far the crappiest Ive ever noticed. Its funny because everything else is near mint. Any ideas? Should I paint them? With what?

Do a quick search on painting rear quarter windows. It's been talked about for years.
BUt it requires wet sanding them down, primering, wet sand, primering, wet sanding, till all the pits are gone, and it's smooth. Then put on a finish coat of black paint, semi-gloss is good and do a couple coats of that. Whalla! New quarter windows.

Sand the window trim as smooth as possible
Make sure you buy the primer/paint at a real automotive paint supply store like Sherman Williams etc.
The paint sold there is industrial quality.

I wire brushed to get the dry rot removed. Sanded with 80grit a little bit, then went down a few grits till the surface was pretty good. Used a flexible/sandable/filler primer. Sanded and primed till smooth, wet sanded last couple of coats. Finished off with Eastwood's trim paint to match the rest of my trim and such. They look pretty nice, the work is worth it with alternative of buying 2 whole new windows.

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the quater windows to do the job like the person did in the link? I would like to try this without taking out the windows.

I'd recommend removing them.

It can be done, make sure and tape the paint off real good. Use something heavy like duct tape first or a good qaulity masking tape in a few layers so you won't scratch the paint. There will be alot of sanding. Mask and cover the car good to avoid overspray, there will be alot of primer spraying.

Hey 302! That looks great! Is it a complete molding? You have to completely remove the old right? I wouldnt want to buy that stick on steeda molding that goes over the old crappy one! Even if it never had any problems I would feel guilty!

That is the stick on Steeda molding. I have seen these on cars and it tends to stick out a little bit. If you look close at it you can tell. I don't think it looks right IMO.

Not sure, I didn't order mine yet (kinda low on cash right now) but at that price, i'm pretty sure it's a complete molding. I'll try to get some more info on them.

You can't replace the moulding. It's part of the window, the glass is moulded into a large rubber piece which the moulding is part of. Those Steeda parts just stick on the existing moulding using double sided sticky tape. I have heard nothing good about them, most say they don't look right on the car.

You have 3 options 1. refinish the existing moulding (cheapest but some work)
2. use those stick-on pieces (don't look too good)
3. buy the whole quarter window assembly (expensive)

50resto has a pair for $700, still sucks. It's under $20 to fix the old ones.

found a nice set on ebay 30.00 each + S&H

Only one company makes those 1/4 windows, and thats ford's glass division (carlite), unless PPG started making them, though I doubt it.

They are an encapsulated peice, which in the autoglass industry that means PRICEY.

Take them out, refinish them the right way, and you will be more then satisfied.
