I know, I know... complete mindless crap, but I've been thinking about getting a game console for a while. Since the prices have come down to my limit, I'm especially anxious to get one. I haven't owned a game console since the mid-80s and that was an Odyssey 2. Oh, I'd always wanted an Atari 2600 when I was a kid, so I did finally buy one with a bunch of games a couple years ago for $10 at yardsale. I had it 6 weeks and sold it for $50. Nostalgia be damned, that thing sucked.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards a PS2 since they'll play DVDs out of the box. I'm also thinking I'd like to play some Asian game releases, but that means either getting a Japanese PS2 or a mod chip... Anyone want to convince me to get an Xbox?

Anyway, vote and give your reasons. :nice:

This is kinda like comparing Classics to Moderns....
The Ps2 is alot older (In Technology Years) then the X-Box...
The X-Box ahs buckets more power and graphics technology, but my PS2 as far as I am concerned, is the greatest. I think it has better games... like, Gran Turismo and stuff. Its been around longer, so they are finding better tricks to speed it up (Even if you hate it, look at Need for Speed: Underground, it makes you feel like your going fast)

And look at SNES... Had some games that still hold up. Super Metroid, FF3(6), Mario Kart, Shadowrun, ETC.

yea... its late, so I am just kinda ranting!

Wow, I do have an Atari 2600 Jr. console and I have approx about 60 Atari games (boxes)! :D I like to say:" Have you played Atari today?" Same thing when I was kid and did played with Atari games, I still loved with classic games. :nice: BTW...Im an Atariage member :D

Right now I have newer version PS2 console (does have built in remote control, processive scans and fan is much quieter than older verison of PS2 console). I bought PS2 console last Dec, and not have any problem with my PS2 and still happy to have it! :D

I voted for the PS2 because Grand Tourismo 4 will be out soon and it will be the next installment of the greatest racing game ever created. Now with that said I have an X-box also. The best game for the X-Box is Halo. Halo 2 will be out in December and I'm sure it will also be awesome. The coolest thing about the x-box is its hard drive which stores all your game files so that you don't have to keep up with memory cards and music files copied from your cd collection. In a few games you can also use your music files and play while listening to your own custom sound track.

The PS2 has far more games than the X-Box and like the other guys said it is closing the graphics gap on the x-box as programmers learn more about how it processes information.

Both consoles will read and play burned CD-RWs and DVDs. Nether will play CD-Rs or DVDs from other regions. In order to play DVDs on the X-Box you must buy the 30 buck remote control which we managed to lose somewhere in our apartment.

Buy Games for your PC and save your money on Proprietary gaming systems. All they ever do is get old and replaced with new tech. At least with your computer, you are upgrading that every couple of years anyway so you can always play the latest games then. :)

The Playstation is the winner based solely on the Grand Tourismo series. You can buy the 2nd one used, and play for ever simply because there are over 200 cars (including classics) to choose from. Or you can enjoy the better (not much better) graphics of GT3. Or you can have the best of both worlds and shell out the 50 bones for the new GT4 coming out this fall.

The best game Xbox has going for it is Halo, which is great, but I've found plenty of fantastic 1st person shooters on ps2 that are outstanding as well. (Bond series including Nightfire, Ghost Recon series, and Rainbow Six 3) The GT seeries has no peers. No other racing game comes close to the "real driving simulator" look and feel of Grand Tourismo.

Hands down PS2, no contest. They won my loyalty since I traded my Sega Genesis in for the PS1. So many great and fun games other than those mentioned already include, the Resident evil series, the Grand theft auto series, the Driver series (one of my favorites) Tekken series, Metal gear solid series, man where do you stop. Of course a subscription to PSM magazine is a must also to keep up on what's hot and what's not but that is only a dollar a month.

Don't even think twice about it man. :spot:

my pc box alone cost $1000 to be able to play games at the same crispness and fps. so thats not entirely true, besides, by the time a new game comes out, you'll need a new cpu, which means new motherboard and ram and new graphics card and ur back up to a whole new system.

I say Xbox, but what your decision should come down to is what games you want to play. Check out the libraries of games out now and the upcoming release lists. Also, if you like playing games online definately get an Xbox, no comparison there.

As far as car games go, Forza Motorsport coming out for Xbox should give Gran Turismo 4 a run for it's money. All the other good car games (Burnout 3, NFS Underground 2, Juiced, etc...) will be on both systems, and more than likely they'll look better on Xbox, due to it's superior technology.

I upgrade my home PC every 18 months....maybe I am weird...I don't do it specifically to play games..I do it for graphics and because I like too...it just so happens that I have a 128 meg graphics card and gigs of memory now that easily out perform any gaming system available :nice:

I have noticed, when I need to upgrade, the latest and greatest gaming system look better then my PC....but 2 days later after I upgrade, the latest and greatest gaming systems take over a year to catch up...plus I can still play all the games I liked 10 yrs ago if I want to.

Just my opinion though...I used to buy systems...had a nintendo, than a NES64, then a Sega, then a dreamcast, then I bought a 486 and never went back to console gaming. I do pay attention though and I know the PS2 has the most popular gaming titles while the x box has the best tech....in 5 months neither will be the best because the new stuff will be hitting for the holiday season.

oh i do agree, and i would be all PC if they made Gran Turismo 4 for pc haha. Ive had my comp 6 months and already have changed cpu's and graphics cards :D (i like to stay on top of things)

Wow, lots of opinions... keep it coming. Right now, it sounds like the PS2 is the better choice for driving games, which is my primary interest. I'm not one much for shooters, but I do like a good fighting game like Tekken once in a while. The thing I should probably do is borrow/rent a PS2 and an Xbox and compare them. I wonder if Blockbuster still rents game consoles?

I would either go with the Xbox or wait a bit and get the ps3 or xbox2. Xbox has superior technology, and games are beginning to catch up. And if you've ever played 16 player halo, FUNNEST THING EVER (even though i suck).

Too bad you cant have the best of all worlds. I own PS2, and ya right now Socom 2 is probably the greatest game ever. Halo for Xbox is amazing and ya the 16 player LAN partiest are out of control. With Gt4 coming out and the new grand theft auto, I put my vote on PS2. The DVD player comes in handy, and you can play your old ps1 games as well. If you do go for the PS2 make sure you get socom 2, internet play is awesome. Dodgestang....what pc games you into? BattleField1942 is one of my favorites right now, followed by Counterstrike/day of defeat.

Mike

OT: i can't get BF1942 to work on my computer anymore. it worked great for awhile and was my favorite game, but when a new patch came out i Dl'ed it, and hasn't worked since. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling it all, nothing works. I know lots of people were having this problem. Is there a fix for this now?

The PS2 gets my vote just because of the Gran Turismo series. GT4 is going to be awesome. Take a look at the graphics. First is "photo" mode, just for eye-candy purposes and the second is game play followed by the complete track list. And can you say "online racing"!!! PS2 all the way.

Not a very high-res image. What the heII kinda of car is that? Looks like theres a meter for weight transfer and seperate gauges for tire temps.

That car is actually a Toyota, it has an electric engine at each tire, and raises and lowers the chassy depending on the terrain, and the terrain is monitored by a computer in the Toyota.
Its a concept car, doubt it will ever be made.

Its also one of the two cars I played, in the playable Demo. It wasn't that good (That car) The game itself was awesome. The other game was a Prious (Spelling), so theres at least two boring cars in the game.

XBOX!!! The PS 2 is a disappointment, it could have been a powerhouse, but it's not. That coupled with the fact that there are a lot more good games (my opinion) on Xbox than on ps2, and you have a winner.

Not to mention the controllers. Why they didn't invent controllers that sit in your hands without having to try to hold them many years ago, I'll never understand.

Then again, if you had PC as an option, I'd go for that. MUCH more power than any gaming system ever seems to have, and the most games. Then again, I have just put in the nforce2 board and 3200+ processor that I got for a bargain, so I'm biased, always have been though.

Oh, and IMO, GT4 doesn't look all that better than V8 Supercars 2 (Toca: Race Driver).

So :p
