I just got my 65 mustang running and when i put it in gear and give it some has I hear the flywheel touching against the starter. I shimmed the starter with a washer and it still does it. It appears that the welds on the ring gear of the flywheel are hitting something. I grinded the welds down and its still doing it. What can I do? Any more washer to shim it make the starte grind on the flywheel. Thanks in advance.

Your started bendix is going bad. This is the gear and clutch assemly on the starter. When this goes bad it just kind of floats and hits the flywheel teeth.

Get the starter tested to see if it is bad. If not it might be a faulty starter solenoid. I knew a guy who had a bad solenoid that kept the starter engaged when driving. He just bought the car and he didn't know what the sound was so kept driving it like that. I'm surprised it lasted 2 weeks before his car caught on fire.

ok, i put in a new starter because i had one laying around and it wasnt pretty. I popped it in and it was grinding pretty nasty. I am really confused on what is going on. Maybe I have the wrong flywheel but I matched it up to the one I had. any ideas?

Also I am running the stock 2bbls carb on my stang and when i hit the pedal the car will stall unless I hit the pedal just right. If i 100% floor it it runs good but when I give it just enought juice to get it going from a stop sign it hesitates really bad and if I am not careful I will stall it out. Is this an accelerator pump problem? Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.
