Not a tech thing as im looking more for opinions and experience. I was getting a check engine light and it was due to both banks running lean. So I check everything, the plugs are clean, the entire fuel system is new, no vaccum leaks and the mileage is where it should be and no pinging So I pull the MAF and fing this:

So I see the sample tube is now straight through instead of being redirected down and slowed down. I know the C&L is similar but do you guys think doing this to a stock one will hurt or help? I just put in a new one and reset the ECU to see if it cured the problem but I wonder if this made a HP increase or did it just hurt the ECUs readings

pics of a stock one? I cant really tell whats wrong with it. Looks like they smoothed up the sides so there is no lip...otherwise im not sure how its supposed to look. Doesnt appear to be anything like a stang meter.

Well I could pull the new one back out if this pic dont help. That plate on the back covers the rear hole behind the sensor and redirects the ari down and back. Its slowing the air down to get a reading so with the way this guy hacked it up it seems the sensor would never get a correct reading But then I was thinking C&L does it with the stock sensor so how do they do it
Anywho, heres the pic

ya not a good idea to mess with a MAF like that..

is the c&l larget in diameter? if so then less air would be passing by a given point inside the MAF maybe enough less to be equal or close to what OEM is. Does the c&l use the OEM electronics in their tube?

C&L uses the stock electronics. I think the sample tube is larger in the C&L as well which would effect the reading as well. Just gotta see if the new one clears the code. If so then I will know its a hurt and not free HP gain..... which I never thought it was.

on my OEM 95 meter it had a big metal post going from top to bottom and a plate behind the little opening for the sensor itself

Holy smokes!!!!!!! Man you would have to be a retard to screw a MAF up like that . Your current MAF is for sure ruined...if he just ported the side a hair then no big deal....but taking out almost the entire center metering column

Be sure to slap the guy accross the face with a leather glove the next time you see him

BTW the only time you screw a meter to gain flow is right before you go get a dyno tune so your MAF X fer function can be properly setup. But if you go to THAT level you really need to bring a second stock meter along just incase.

The C&L maf has different size sample tubes. They have a chart on their website. I would try a stock MAF for now and see what the result is.

Well after putting over 100 miles on it the code has not come back so there it is.
Porting and hacking the stock MAF meter is bad...... mmmm kay.
