Possible Exhaust Leak Help, Ticking Sound

Hey,

I just had all my lifters replaced because a couple were bad.

The next day after getting them fixed I start to hear a ticking sound again after getting on the car pretty good on a back road.

I listenend with a rubber tube and it doesnt sound like its comming from the valve train. It sounds more like its comming from behind the upper intake, or possibly by the BBK Adjustable Fuel Pressure Reg. As shown in picture B and C below.

Additionally, when I rev the engine up I can see a little cloud of smoke come up kinda around the same area. As shown in picture A below. I can't tell exactly where its comming from.

The ticking sound increases in speed as I rev the engine, and gets a little louder as well.

Any help or ideas would be great!

the thing i circled in red is part of the pcv system. it should be attached to the upper intake. it allows vented crank case gas to recycle into the intake. thats where you are seeing the puff of smoke from. and you are probably just hearing noise coming throught the hole.

Thanks man! I just went and looked and yeah theres nothing in there.

Theres supposed to be a PCV valve in there right?

So how do I fix it? Do I just need to put a PCV valve in there? Can it attach to my Track Heat upper? etc...

you can get the valve and the o-ring that holds it in at any parts store. then just get a piece of 1/2 imch line and connect it to one of the larger vaccum lines on the upper intake.

Hey,

Okay the pcv valve and hose was still there so I just stuck it back in.

The ticking noise is still there. It sounds a little louder on the drivers side, behind/around the upper intake.

yea that could be a header gasket leak. or a bent rod. seeings how your lifters are new i rule them out.

Bent rod as in push rod or connecting rod!

Now that you have that PCV problem square away. Use your Car Dr. Stethescope (Rubber Hose) and listen around each one of the header primaries. If you do have a header leak it should be pretty apparent as to where its coming from.

The sound could also be improperly adjusted rockers....they may be loose and causing a racket. Could also be a bent pushrod. I doubt it would be a bent rod.

I had a somewhat similar tick and it turn out to be a small leak in the lower intake on the passenger side rear from one bolt backing out a lil

My rockers are Pedestal 1.7 roller rockers.

I talked to the Mechanic who did my lifters and he said it just the 1.7 Roller Rockers. Wasnt anything to worry about unless it gets louder. Said will not get good results adjusting the Pedestal Roller Rockers because can only go down so far on shims before start to have problems with the roller rockers. He also built the engine and said they are adjusted fine. Is this true?

Probably true. Some rockers make more noise than others. My comp cams pro magnum rockers make noise at idle. But only if you open the hood. if any one rocker seems significantly louder than another, that may be reason for concern. But if they are just a little noisy, i wouldn't worry about it.

what rockers brand do you have? i have 1.7 crane pedestal mount and they do sound more than stock ones. Also check header bolts, I had a similiar problem that had me crazy because it sounded like the car broke something...up until a friend of mine checked the headers and saw that I was missing two screws...put two new and problem gone
