After 13 years of restoring my '65 coupe, I am now trying to work out all the bugs. The car has a late model 302 stoked 347 with a March Pulley setup, new power steering pump and the original / rebuilt power steering assembly. The power steering assembly comes pretty close to the headers. We also put a small hole in the cap of the external power steering reservoir to vent it.
Whenever I drive the car, I end up spraying power steering fluid all over the engine compartment. It seems like it may be boiling over (if that is possible) as there is a large pool of the fluid sitting on the frame rail below the reservoir. Eventually, I loose all the power steering fluid in the reservoir and my power steering cuts out completely. Both the reservoir and PS fluid get very hot.
I have filled the reservoir, started the vehicle and turned the wheels from lock to lock. Upon doing so, I can see the fluid foaming out of the hole in the reservoir cap.
I am not sure what would cause this. I am currently using standard PS fluid. Is the new PS pump too much for the original rack to handle? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Attached is a pic of the PS pump and remote reservoir.
