1989 Owners Manual pg. 149 specifies ATF Type F for the power steering or a fluid meeting Ford Spec ESW-M2C33-F.

The T-5 still takes an ATF meeting Ford Mercon specifications.

The brand really shouldn't matter as long as it meets specs. Personally I always go with a name brand.

Do you have a 5 speed transmission in your stang? Is the Type-F that is recommended in the 1989 Owners Manual that is specified suitable for my Manual 5-speed transmission? Is the Owners Manual you have mentioned for an '89 with a 5-speed?

Type F is not for use in T5's. All WC T5's take Mercon (as mentioned). I would NOT use Type F in the trans.

Saleen 0679 said that Type F is required in the Owners Manual for an '89 GT, but I guess that is for an Auto. What is specifically required in the Owners Manual of an '89 GT with a 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION? and by the way, what model of Mercon should be used?

I think I see what you are saying: The PS systems are the same, whether you have an auto or T5 trans.

Didn't you say though that Type F is not for a T-5? So then I guess it doesn't matter if the Type-F is used for either one, right?

StreetStang.

I think you mistook was I wrote. The specs I stated should have been taken separately. To clear things up:

Power Steering Fluid:
Type F fluid is specified for use in the power steering unit for all versions of '89 Mustang.

Transmission Fluid:
An ATF meeting Ford Mercon specs is used for the fluid inside the T-5 manual transmission (and the automatic transmission as well).

I think I understand you now, were you just telling me the type of transmission fluid used also? in addition to the power steering fluid. Was it just for my general understanding?

I might have been the one who started the confusion. When I originally read your post (quoted), I thought you were asking about fluid for a T5, rather than letting us know you had a T5 (In case it mattered for your application).

Typical SN thread - gets off course, but ends up with good info and is kinda fun.

So then you agree that Type-F fluid is the specified ideal power steering fluid for my stang?

Yeah, we both were agreeing the whole time. Like i said, when you brought up the transmission, I think we (or at least I) thought you were asking about fluid for it, rather than asking us if your required different PS fluid because you had a 5 speed.

Type F it is for all fox PS systems, AFAIK.

Good luck.

When I started the thread, I wanted to know what Power Steering Fluid to put in my stang. Then, as the thread went on, I wanted to know exactly what you quoted above, IF I REQUIRED DIFFERENT PS FLUID BECAUSE I HAD A 5 SPEED. Now I understand you completely.

Heck, I'm not even sure where in the thread things got twisted in my head. I ended up thinking you were asking about both fluids so I replied that way. As long as everything got cleared up in the end then all is well.

Thanx to everyone who gave me their input on what type of Power Steering Fluid to use in my stang, especially Hissin50 and Saleen0679, sorry if I confused you guys. I was not asking for both fluids, just wanted to know what fluid to use at first, then wanted to know what Hissin50 posted, "IF I REQUIRED DIFFERENT PS FLUID BECAUSE I HAVE A 5 SPEED." Everything is good now, and I completely understand what you guys have mentioned. Thanx again, Jeff.
