I have put power steering back in my mustang, and it works great all except for one thing, when I turn to the right it is a very shallow turn, but when I turn to the left it is a very very sharp turn. So obviously I have not assembled it correctly. but what is the problem? Any Ideas 1967 coupe 289

When I bought the car, it had all the power steering parts in a box and a manual steering knuckle on the car. I removed the manual knuckle and installed the slave arm, the control valve the power steering pump and all the hoses. It turns effortlessly from right to left, but it is a shallow turn to the right and a very sharp turn to the left.

Were the PS parts new, and for your application?

I read thru this:

It sounds like a basic simple swap. However, it sounds like you may have some how changed the turning ratio? I don't think I'm describing that right.

How many turns lock to lock to go all the way left from center, and how many to all the way right?

If you 'gained' a few turns on the steering sector input shaft, that might explain your problem....

its 1 1/2 to 2 to the right and 2 1/2 to 3 to the left. all of the parts are orrigonal to the car except for the controol valve it is a new reman. the steering box is orrigonal. I hooked up the push pull hose from the control valve to the slave backwards (haynes manual is wrong just do the opisite!) but fixed that issue. its the steering ratio i have a fealing, but how do you change that without adjusing the tie rod ends as well as the control valve. can you just change the control valve as it is screwd onto the center link?

I'm working from memory of doing this job about thirteen years ago and don't have the car on site to consult, but it sounds like you ran into some of the same problems I did.

First, I think it is possible to put the pitman arm on backwards/upside-down. This would skew travel.

Second, from your description of five turns lock to lock, it sounds like you still have a manual steering gear. I doubt you will ever be pleased by this gearing with power. I had to change to a power gear before I was ever happy with the steering.

The ratio has to do with how many turns it takes to go from lock to lock. From dead center it should be an equal amount of turns to get to lock going right or left. If you have something other then that then I would guess that the pitman arm is not aligned correctly.

As far as ratios go, the power box is 16:1 and the manual box is 19:1 (if my memory serves me).
