Power steering pulley HELPP!!!!

This is driving me crazy, I bought an a/c delete kit and I rented a pulley removal kit for my p/s. There is a hex screw in the middle of the pulley, I cant get it out nor in my research have seen anyone mention anything about this hex bolt, some say all you need to do is pull the pulley off but it would seem that you need to get that bolt out first? What do I do, do I need to get that out or is the pulley just pressed on? Please help this is driving me crazy.

The hex or allen wrench bolt is right in the middle of the pulley,

The power steering pump pulley presses on. Don't worry about that middle hex. It's not a bolt, that is the middle of the pumps shaft. Install the tool how it says in the directions, then use an impact to pull it off. It is very simple. You reinstall it the same way, just reverse the steps.

I just went through this. Slip the two half clamps over the pully end, screw in the center bolt. There are threads inside the shaft. LOL

Do the reverse to put it back on. I used a little trick of heating up the pully before I put it on, virtually slipped right on. When it cools, it shrinks and will not move until it is pulled again.

You will need to rent or buy a PS steering puller. The PS pulley has a ridge that the puller seats on. Then you crank the screw on the middle of the puller to get the pulley off the shaft.

You can rent the tool at Autozone or other auto parts stores.

I have used a bearing separator & harmonic balancer puller together to do the job.

Use this tool to put it back on...

I usually just use the bolt that comes with the new PS pump.

i just tried using a 2 jaw puller... bad idea...bent the pully all to **** and it didnt move a bit on the shaft...grrr

Why exactly are you removing the PS pulley? The AC delete kit should just require moving the power steering pump assembly up higher on the head using the new bracket. This is what vehicles without AC had in the first place. Its been a while since I did this to mine, but I don't remember ever having to remove the PS pulley.

I bought the a/c delete kit from ford racing, I actually have the delete kit in there and the p/s moved up however, I need to take the pulley off to get to the p/s bolts, Since the p/s is brought up higher the angle needs to be changed. Basicly the p/s pump it self needs to be rotated on the main p/s braket. It is kinking one of the hoses with the way it is now and the resivour is almost verital and almost hiting the hood.

How do you thread the installer in the pump shaft since its not threaded. That hex bolt that I thought was a bolt isnt a bolt, the end of the pump shaft just has a spot for an allen wrench. I looked at a new unit at my local auto shop and the shaft is not threaded, so how do I re-install the pulley??

I've got an 87gt with an auto tranny, I've heard that later years with manual have a different size pump, what delete kit did you use?

The ford racing one...the one i used is just a alluminum bracket the the power steering bolts too and it has a bracket that bolts to the front side of the pump to the water pump and such for support...also my car is a 90 GT but the car was auto when it was stock I converted it

I've done 7 ac delete kits and not one time did i ever remove the p/s pulley, I dont get it.

I put in the ford racing kit today to move the pump where the AC unit was I had no problems at all. Only other thing I did that you might need to do is rerout the line that runs to the pump easy fix. I do know if you are looking at the drawing for the install it looks like you have to pull the pulley off but you dont.

Inside the shaft, it is threaded. Mine was filled up with garbage, but a little carb cleaner sprayed it out.

I'm having trouble installing the frpp a/c delete kit on my 89. I can't get the power steering unit off of the long stud in the right side of the head. The stud won't screw out so I can put the new stuff on. I have searched on several sites and nobody has mentioned this problem. It is the far right bolt that goes through the big a/c bracket, but its a stud with a nut not a bolt and I can't figure out how to get it out.

The stud should spin out. It's prob frozen and needs some TLC. Maybe some PB blaster and a good pair of vice grips. I always left the stud in the head and pulled the radiator. That should give you enough room to pull the pump off the stud.

I sprayed it down with Marvel Mystery Oil yesterday, and borrowed a decent pair of Vise Grips from work. It came right out, job is complete. My car already had the condenser and evaporator and all the lines and stuff stripped so I maybe lost another 10-15 lbs and cleaned up the engine bay a bit. Thanks for the tip...
