I am installing power steering on a 68 Mustang convertible, the car did not come from the factory with PS, I have installed everything on the car that it requires for PS. The PS pump & fluid is way too hot. I have replaced the pumps with 3 different pumps & replaced the control valve, also 3 times. The lines are clean & not crossed. Compared to another 68, everything the same. I don't understand why it is overheating?

How are you determining that it's too hot? P/S does run pretty hot when th car is fully warmed up. Is the pump locing up? Hoses melting? SLave cyl seizing? WHat's going on with it?

The fluid is so hot it melted my plastic funnel, the housing of the pump you cannot touch. Also, can't touch control valve, too hot.

Make sure you're using Type F fluid. I wasn't and found my pump very hot, also.

Sounds like your turning the pump to fast, check the pulley sizes.
I disagree with the type F fluid, I run the Trick-shift trany fluid in my 65 power steering and it works great and stays cool. I also run this fluid in my C4 trany and Im running a supercharger with NOS.
Dont get caught up with what the factory recommends, there is better stuff out there.
P.S...... You changed the factory recommended carb and intake didnt you!

Checking the pully size is a good way to go. Maybe switching to a larger pully will help by slowing the fluid down. Does your pressure line have a restrictor in it ? I think there is supposed to be a restrictor in the pressure line.

Also, there are power steering coolers available. They are basically trans coolers.
