It seems to me that Type F is ATF (it has a high coefficient of friction - used on old time trannies).

I actually found it in a Tractor supply store, I believe some of the old Ford Tractors had P/S.

Not sure about our pumps but I know some you can just use Automatic Transmission fluid instead....I never would in mine, but just thought I would mention it, we used it in my friends older t/a and its fine....I use P/s fluid in mine and its quiet, only whine there is if im sitting there and i turn the wheel like someone else above mentioned, in my friends P.O.S. 86 Jeep Comanche we've even used 80w90 gear oil in his pump (stopped the leak also), it had a nice white foaming action to it hahah it worked fine for over a year till the motor blew up....but yeah hearing a Ford power steering pump is very common, even new ones, my boss that owns his own shop, he said when he gets one from Autozone? they whine for like 50 miles he says then they start to shut up, and ones from Advance will quiet up in like 10 miles....idk something like that....

If you own a Fox Mustang the ONLY Fluid that is recommended is Type F.

Lucas oil makes a great power steering fluid. This stuff works wonders.

Has worked on all of my whining pumps.

You can pick it up at any auto parts store. It's much thinker than the normal fluid.

First try and get as much of the fluid as you can from the top of the pump. A turkey baster works good. (don't use your mom's or wifes she will be mad)

You dont need to get it all out, just the more you get the more of the lucas will fit.

Once you get all you think you can fill back up with the lucas to the proper level.

Start car, Give a few minutes to work threw the system, you could even turn the wheels from right to left full travel to help it out.

If this does not get rid of the whine it will make it quiet enough to were you won't notice it.

If it is thicker than than Type F then you are changing the Viscosity from what is ONLY recommended to be in your System. Many guys have leaking Racks and Pumps that whine and spend Time and Money Replacing parts only to use the wrong fluid and have to repeat the process, put what you want in your system, but remember if you own a Fox the Only thing that should be in it is Type F Fluid.

And in the Owners Manual and the Ford Service Manual it tells you to use ONLY Type F Power Steering Fluid.

Type F is an Automatic Transmission Fluid, which our Foxes also happen to use for PS. I'm sure Ford bottles up (ESW-M2C33-F spec I believe) Type F fluid and labels it PS fluid with an X times price tag, but it is the same fluid as a jug of ATF Type F.

Now what you wouldn't want to do is throw a quart of Dexron or Mercon in your PS system.

I put in some of the Lucas too, only thing wrong with mine is it had a small leak. If it did damage to the pumps I think it would be a well-known problem with lots of complaints? If mine went anyways I got a spare in the shed.

The issue I see is seal compatibility. Fluids other than Type F don't always play nice with seals, let alone the coefficient of friction differences.

The problem is that putting the wrong fluid in doesnt create a known issue immediately, so most folks would not surmise that fluid caused the item to fail.

The best results I have been able to get have been using a new parts store pump and Redline synthetic ATF, which was left over from my T5 trans fluid change.

The pump was very quiet for a good couple of months... 6mo IIRC...

Then the noise set in... and changing the fluid at that point did not help reduce the noise.

Next time I have to replace a pump, I plan on running full synthetic ATF, and changing the PS fluid every oil change.....
may be overkill, but I want to know if that will work or not... ???

Jason, I also used Redline when I renewed all of the steering components. However, IIRC their PS fluid meets Type F requirements for Ford steering systems requiring Type F. Don't quote me on that but I remember having to do some checking and reading to be sure I had the best guess with picking what I thought to be the most appropriate fluid. Note that I did *not* actually call their tech line to ask on that one.

Honestly, I don't remember JT...
and sadly, I don't think I have any of the Redline stock left.

I have been using Mobile 1 for everything, as it is easier to find locally...
Haven't tried it in the PS pump yet though

Mine was noisy. I just "rebuilt" the pump with a good cleaning out and new seals. It's quiet now.
