power steering whine...

I just rebuilt my pump 2 months ago and it's quieter than uh... something that's really quiet.

But seriously, the rebuild kit is only $10 - $15 from Autozone, only takes a couple hours and it works awesome!!

I have heard that running a larger P/S pulley will also keep it from whining.
I read somewhere that Ford P/S pumps run almost twice the pressure of other mfgs. So the larger pulley keeps the pressure down and helps keep the pump alive.

I have posted that on here before about 2X the pressure....I might try a larger pully and maby rebuild mine at the same time.

What i did was a powerstearing flush, then added a BG additive that made it realy quit and it never realy wined again. worked pretty good, the only thing i notice is it will make a slight wine during start-up in the winter time and go away after a few minutes.

Try Lucas Powersteering Fluid additive.

My 1990 GT made noise, my 1999 Expedition made noise and my 2003 Windstar made noise. I took out an ounce or two and added the Lucas, now they are all quiet. I regularily change the fluid in the Mustang, when it comes out of storage and add two ounces of Lucas every time.

Lucas didn't do jack for my P/S pump. I put some in when I drained and refilled the nasty ancient fluid from my pump reservoir a year ago; ever since then, it's STILL whined the same, AND it started steadily losing fluid.

The only 100% sure cure for P/S pump whine on a Ford is to just delete it. :D
