pre-oiling?

Hello all. Getting ready to start my 8 year project in a few days. This motor hasn't turned over in about 18 months. How can I pre-oil it? Is it possible to remove the distributor and some how do it that way? Or won't that make the oil pump shaft fall out of the way and I won't be able to get the dizzy back in? Thanks in advance.

remove dizzy and get a socket (i usally tape the socket to the extension and install the extension in the drill i use 1/4 drive socket and exstention) the shaft in there and spin it with a drill thats what i do.

If you have a heavy duty pump drive or the factory one with the retainer, the pump shaft shouldn't come out. Spin the shaft as 86bluecobra said but rotate it counterclockwise with the drill. I do this with the valve covers off so I can verify the pressure reaches the rockers.

when i did mine, i rented a tool from autozone, basically a distributor shaft that works with a rill. was like a $10 deposit, got it back when i returned it.

The shaft is a 1/4" hex. I made an oil pump driver out of old 5.0 disributor shaft.

You can do it with a ratchet too if you dont want to load up your drill.

Ditto on the ratchet. The my engine builder uses one on all his builds. In fact I just was by his place and he was priming a 5.0L but I had to go before he fired it.

I forgot to mention that a normal electric hand drill will probably be inadequate. Something like a 1/2hp gear reduction drill is more like it.
