Alright basically this is whats going down. Ive got a 2002 mustang GT with the automatic transmission. The car is basically stock except for mufflers. The other night I was driving my car, ran into a store real quick with the car still on, came out, went to put the car in gear and it wouldnt go in to gear. Finally I got it out of park and got it in gear and drove home. The next day I went to drive to school and nothing. I couldnt get the car out of park for anything. I knew how to get the car in gear by having the key in the off position and just puting it into neutral but when I looked under the dash around the brake lever there was a little switch box with two wires going into it. One of them had ripped out so I figured problem solved, right? Wrong. After ordering the part from Ford and replacing it it still wouldn't work. The brake lights also are not coming on at all and in the owners manual it says that if the brake lights are malfunctioning that would have something to do with it. I checked all the fuses and they are all fine...Any input on what is wrong???

I can't get it up......ok that didn't sound right.

It sounds more like an electrical problem but it could be a physical problem with your shifter linkage. On the drivers side of the transmission pan, their should be linkage from your shifter going to it. Get down there, look, and see if you see anything loose or anything broken. Its really hard to analyze your problem without seeing it in person but I'll try and help anyway.

I just checked all the linkage and everything is fine...Im thinking that it has something to do with the brake lights since they aren't working when the brake is being pressed...what would cause the brake lights to no longer continue to work? All the fuses are good. Any other opinions??

When you press the brake pedal, there is a solenoid energized to release the gearshift. The solenoid is located under the gearshift lever. You should be able to hear it "click" when depressing the brake. There is a good chance that your brake light switch has become dislodged, disconnected, or failed. Take a gook look with a flashlight above the brake pedal.
Purpose of the solenoid is to prevent you from shifting to Drive or Reverse without the brakes holding the car from lurching forward or backward. I think there are instructions for bypassing the feature in the owners manual (in case of failure).

Still in warranty? For something like that, why not?

OK, I checked out the wiring diagram.
Power to the shift interlock solenoid passes through fuse 35 (15A, located under the dash). If that fuse is blown, you won't be able to shift out of Park.
The interlock system is activiated through fuse 17 (15A). If you pull that fuse, you have effectively bypassed the system. This fuse also protects the Cruise Control, so it won't work, but at least you can shift into Drive and get the car somewhere for a permanent repair.
