Start with a good wash of the wheels:

Warm water and a fair amount of car wash soap.
Use a horse hair brush on the larger surfaces to scrub the soapy water into all of the cracks and crevases.
Rinse well
Use a terry towel (cotton rag similar to carpet) to rub the compound on the rims
Let it dry on the rim for 15 minutes
Use a clean part of the towel to clean the compound off.

Waalah! Clean rims....

Wheels are coated..compounds could remove the factory finish. You could always have them painted, I did with my last set, they looks spankin new and sold for well more than I thought they would.

May not be able to pull the years of brake dust darkening the wheel coating by using any compunds. Give it a try, but I agree with DMAN .... PAINT em for the best results.

Trust me guys.... With enough elbow grease, most (not all) of it will come out.

If you wash the wheels once a week and rub them out once a week.... They can look brand new!

If the paint is not flaking off use some detailing clay on them just like you would the car's paint. Just make sure you don't use it on anything but wheels afterwards. My wheels were really bad, someone spray painted them with cheap wheel paint right on the car. I took them off, cleaned up the overspray and painted them the right way.
