So I'm guessing I'll have to match my lifters with my cam selection???

No, you can run the stock replacement lifters and then you must choose the springs for the cam lift, but Mike will use good springs and aI believe they will be good up to .550" lift or so - check with him.

I bought the lifters wytstang linked to............

I did not replace mine. They were in perfect working condition. It is, however, an excellent idea to replace your lifters, especially if your car has a significant amount of miles on it (100K+). The extra 100 bucks you will spend will be worth the piece of mind knowing that you have a brand spankin' new valvetrain. Collapsed lifters are a real PITA.

Mine were OK until they felt the new higher spring pressure, so I had to go in and replace them.

Yeah, I've seen a few people with good results from the XE274 in 331s and 347s. If I don't get a custom cam for the 331 that WILL be the cam I get. As a matter of fact I was recommending it to a friend of mine for his 331. But for now I just want a cam that will make this 302 run really well and I think the XE274 might be a little too much cam for this 302. Or am I wrong? If any of you cam experts think it'll work good with my current setup please let me know because I'd be glad to get it. Yesterday I was looking at the XE258 and XE266 cams and they seem like they might be little better for the 302 but I'm open to suggestions.

for right now the 274 would be fine in the 302... it willbe a higher spinner.... shifting close to the limiter. you will haev to check P/V clearance definitely and might have to flycut.

the xe270 with 1.7s would be a great cam for the 302/185s in your current setup

so it's generally a good idea! Got it. Well I think that's about that. Looks like I've got every answer for every question I had. Still working on the cam but at least I got that narrowed down. Thanks for all of the help guys and I'll keep you all posted

Well, I already flycut my pistons because the 2.02s wouldn't clear the valve reliefs. I thought the pistons had over sized valve reliefs when I bought them but I found out otherwise when I built the motor. The only thing I'll have to upgrade will be the valve springs because I have the regular ones that come on the AFRs. Any suggestion on springs or should I just get the AFR high lift springs? Question about the XE274: will that put my powerband way up around 4000rpms and up or will it still kick in hard around 3000rpms and pull hard all the way to redline?

I had Mike do the spring upgrade on mine...i threw a new set of FRPP lifters in to, as said, cheap money really....low mile stockers will suffice to...they're pretty much bulletproof if the look good...

My 19 required running longer pushrods, so keep that in mind. , i run Scorpion 1.6s...
The B cam prolly can run stock PRs??...Pretty sure thats true...
6.290 is about the lenght you'll need on the PRs for the 19 cam...I used 6.300 and shimmed them .010 to get the preload....6.290 should nail it...
I also had plenty of PV clearance...checked that twice...plenty of room on both In/Ex...

Nothings ever easy when it comes to mods....

Originally from Abbeville 15miles south of Lafayette...familiar? and you?

SO I'll need new pushrods too!?!?! Haha, so all told, pushrods, lifters, cam, head work and lower work. I'll need a mechanic. looks like gears will surely have to wait. Thanks guys

might of persuaded me on the B cam due to having to change pushrods, etc on the 19

IMHO I think you will have more fun with some 373's than the motor upgrades you are planning.

With the head/cam upgrade the power band will move up a bit and that will be felt even more down low with the lower numbered gear ratio.

I'd do the gears first and when funds are available then do the heads/cam stuff.

IMHO? "I'm hung over?" Haha, just joking, Graddy, I think I'll take your advice on this one, it's turning out to be more of a task to be then expected. I may just go with the 3:73s and a shifter, feel like I'm selling my car short though. I'd like to get up there and add some horses...let me sit on it for the holidays and talk to my wife some more! Haha, I mean after all she's the boss well at least I let her think that
