going to a pull a thon tomorrow all you can carry for $50.00 wondering if it's only 96-97 explorers that the heads would work or any 5.0 they made. And what years was that an option for explorers

The V8 Explorer 95-99 heads will all work; some may require different headers and spark plug wire to work properly.

The heads with the 3 bars cast into the end of the head are the 95-97 GT40 heads. These are the only heads that will work with the stock 5.0 Mustang EGR. If you have smog inspections in your area, this is a consideration. They also work with both stock and aftermarket headers.

The heads with 4 bars cast into the end of the heads are GT40P. They have a different angle on the spark plugs and may require special spark plug wires or/and or shorter spark plugs. Some aftermarket heaters don't fit GT40P heads. They also do not have EGR passages cast into the heads, so thy won't pass smog inspection in areas that do smog tests.

so the gt-40P's you have to delete the egr I was told just have to upgrade springs. which should be done either way. sounds like p's are a waste of energy

The GT40P flow better as cast and have a potential to make more power, but have the problems I listed above. You need to upgrade the valve springs on both GT40 & GT40 P heads. If you do not live in an area where there are emissions inspections, then you can user either set of heads.

Hopefully, someone who is actually running GT40P heads will chime in and tell us more about the header and spark plug wire issue.

That's really what I'm worried about. Gonna update anyway but if I can't run Mac headers with em then I'm screwed. Emissions is no problem around here running dumps with no cats and smog delete. Yard has about 10 cars from 96-98 so hoping to find a couple sets

Good times. I pulled a 96 explorer 5.0 at one of those. Factor in clean up and machine time I had a gt40 engine for under 300 bucks.

Wanting gt40 not gt40p's. Found 2000 mountainer first then a 96 awd explorer. Me vs the Explorer the Explorer won. And we're gt40p's. Idk if that's all awd's or what. All in all waste of my time. Just made it easier for the next person

No breaker bar and truck was 3 ft off the ground. And had time limit. Been sitting for who knows how long. Odds weren't with me. Never have done it anyway.

Bummer. Yeah, when removing big pieces a breaker bar and mallet are mandatory. Honestly if they provided a hoist just taking the whole engine may have been the better option. Everything on that block has resale. Early bronco and f100 guys want the serpentine set up. Intake sells right away, alternator is a 3g upgrade. that whole engine is money and they aren't as common as they used to be. Cash for clunkers killed them.

Should have pulled motor like you said tho. Wasn't prepared for the battle. Broke a lower intake bolt anyway. And the rear one wouldn't come out for anything so that one would have broke as well. They have plenty more so going again soon

eBay prices have been going up. Seeing exploder intakes creeping up to almost $200 plus shipping these days.

I'd attribute that to the discontinuation of the 1993 cobra Chinese intake

How many fox mustangs out there still have a stock HO intake on them?
