Pulley Install

I had a set of Steeda U/D Pulleys put on last week. Now I have some kind of oil leak!

Had it back to the shop today, and they said they didn't see a leak.

Just got home and got another fresh spot, so I went under the car and took a picture. Is this the crankshaft pulley?

that is the crankshaft pulley, maybe they didn't put a little rtv sealant around the crankshaft bolt. no big deal, take it to them and tell them to seal the bolt and check it's tq specs.

Well. Just installed mine on monday and no leaking. PITA, btw. You are supposed to put a dab of RTV sealant in the keyhole slot of the new crank pulley to keep oil from leaking out. Ask if they did that.

That is about all it could be. They SHOULD have torqued it to spec...you hope.

what do you mean by torque it to spec?? can you please explain a bit more with details. because i will do the instal myself 2 days from now .

There are specific torque specs for tightening the crankshaft bolt, which are in the steeda install instructions. I hope you are strong and have the right tools. The crankshaft bolt was VERY hard to get off on my car('99 GT with 95k). Actually had to use the torque wrench to get it off for extra leverage, which is not good really. A piece of pipe over a ratchet would work pretty good, but didn't have that.

Tightening the new bolt also takes some strength and a few choice words.

One other thing...I had to take my alternator down to Advance Auto to have them hit the bolt with an impact wrench to get it off. My alternator was turning so I couldn't get the bolt off.

They will have to get a new crankshaft bolt, right? Aren't those supposed to be a "one time only" use?

I agree with the above post concerning rtv sealant around the keyway slot in the pulley. If you don't seal this off, it can and probably will leak oil. The idea that the crank pulley bolt might be bad is also possible. I say asked them if they re-used the stock bolt and if they put any rtv sealant in the keyway slot. If not, then one of those two, possibly both are the culprate.

The stock bolt is torque to yield and must be replaced each time it's torqued.

If the keyways wasn't siliconed properly, you need a new bolt. ARP makes a replacement bolt that is stronger and can be reused.

so when installing the crank pully , we have to buy a new bolt ????

Pully kits usually come with a new bolt.

Well, took the car back in this morning. The tech said that the crankshaft bolt I have is not a "torque to yield" type (it came with pulleys).

So, he took it out and re-installed it with new sealant around the bolt and the keyway. He took out the bolt and showed it to me. Didn't look to me like it had enough sealant the first time.

I ran it for awhile and checked for leaks, but didn't see any. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

"the bolt that came with it, is not a torque to yield" <---- what is that mean.since i'm getting the same U/D pulleys , they will most likely give me the same bolt you have. So what should i do !!????

I advise going to ford and picking up a new crankshaft bolt for $5. I used that instead of the one steeda gave me. Both should work though. I definately wouldn't re-use a bolt, though.

You shouldn't need sealant around the bolt. Just the keyway slot. Not alot either.

Make sure that you have siliconed on the notch on the crank pulley, and also make sure that the pulley is torqued to spec, it is somewhere around 70ftlbs I think, mustang world how to install underdrive pullies, I have the steeda SFI pullies and have had no problems, it is 99.9% likely to be a problem with the install on the crank pulley

This is bad for your torque wrench it can throw the spec off so it doesn't read correctly, just a warning.

The tech said that if it's a one-time use only bolt, it would say TTY on the head. Anybody hear that before?

The bolt that steeda provides is just to start the install and you are suppose to reuse the stock bolt after the crank pulley is started on the shaft. This conversation is getting scary hope this helps you guys. P.S the stock head bolts are torque to yeild one time bolts not the crankshaft pulley bolt

This exact thing happened to me this week. I just pulled the pulley off and put it back together (with a new bolt!) and I'm not going to start it until tomorrow to give the RTV some time to set up. If you start it up right away while the RTV is still wet, won't the oil seep through it again??? I'll be safe I guess. I haven't driven it since last week. It'll feel fast again.

For those of you who have trouble loosening the crank shaft bolt, didn't the instructions say to put the car in a higher gear or in reverse so the crank would stay still?

I didn't have any instructions. Someone else did the install and I decided to fix it myself. I put mine in 5th. I just figured the damn motor would spin in anything else?
