Recently I replaced the plugs and wires on my 94 v6. I got autolite wires and autolite platinum plugs. After installing both i read a few places that the 94 v6 used double plats as stock. Is this true and if so should I change to those?
If the car runs fine with the ones you put in, I'd leave them in. The main reason they use platinum plugs is for longer intervals between tune ups. Platinum also is a hotter plug than copper. I don't know if Ford used double platinum plugs or not. The dealer's parts dept should be able to tell ya.
Well Tru_Blue_104 is right, they do that for longer service intervals. And the OE plug they used was a Motorcraft Platinum plug, the equivalent to that would be an autolite platinum plug, part number AP2545. You are going to be fine dont worry. I personally use autolite coppers because i can get them 3 stages colder to advance the timing without problems, and prep the engine for Nitrous. But anyway yes your fine.
Thanks guys. The reason I ask is because before these I had Autolite Coppers in there. And it seems that they were a bit better on gas and a bit more power. The power may just be in my head, but I know I was getting about 25-50gallons more per tank. Basicly, what plugs would give me the best mpg? (kinda changing this thread a bit )
I was getting about 12-15 mpg on stock plugs with 50,000 miles with my steel foot (wasn't quite lead all the time lol), now I get about 18-25mpg with NGK coppers gapped at .53 and still have bad accelerating habits and do alot of city to highway driving. Basically city driving with a 45 mph speed limit. I also got 9mm JBA plug wires, maybe a slight difference, but I did half then a week later did the other half so kinda stepped into it.
From what ive been hearing from my friends and such, I think Im gonna switch back to coppers. What brands work best with out cars? NGK? Autolite? Motorcraft? any others maybe?
I hear alot of goods about Autolite and NGK. Platinums are good, unless you want to push power, they foul out and die quickly when you start getting high heat and more power. Don't know exactly when that is, I don't think bolt ons would get you far enough to have the problem, but if you ever plan on a super/turbocharger or nitrous, platinums just don't cut it.
Well i dont know about NGK, but i know Autolite works real well for me. I use Autolite 2543 for my 6, because well Double platinums crapped on themselves and so did regular 2545's I needed colder plugs and for the 6 as far as autolite goes 2543 is the coldest. And I run a bit of that methanol nitroglycsomething crap in mine. Basically if you have the basic upgrades i would switch to Autolite 2544, and if you get more into it with porting and polishing heads and so forth i would switch to 2543
