Hey guys. I just picked up a great 66. I had a question for the experts though. In park and neutral the engine runs smooth as silk, but when I shift into gear....drive or reverse....it starts to shake pretty bad like it wants to die until I gun it a little. Sometimes after gunning it, it will miss some...almost like it is trying to run out of gas. It also "diesels" some when I try to turn it off. The engine is a 200, mated to a cruisomatic (single barrel carb).

Any ideas? Does it just need a carb adjust? Like I said I just got it and am at work, so I wont get a chance to mess with it until tonight.

Thanks

first it sounds like you need to bump the idle speed a bit. remember it is set with the trans in drive. next you might want to decarbonize the engine. run some seafoam or Z-max through the fuel system. third bump the ignition timing a few degrees.

Ill give the seafoam a shot first. I actually already have a can ready to go. When I drove the first time it was about 4 months ago, and it drove great. Since then, it has sat and been started only once. I'm not sure if that indicates anything, but for reference sake, it was running like new then.

Just out of curiosity, have you driven it? Mine used to do this in the morning when it was cold, but after a couple minutes of warming up, it stopped.

It was brought to me at work, and I drove it home... then I went to put gas in it, washed it, drove to my wifes work, and then home. All in all about 6-7 miles...that should be plenty right?

When I want to clean out an engine, after I put in the additives I'll put about 50 hard miles on it. I'll stop and then put the pedal to the medal as they say and wind it out (within reason) over and over again. I wouldn't think 6-7 miles is going to do all that much IMHO.

I've also got the 200 I6 and she's a bit tempermental as well if she's sat awhile.
rbohm gave you some good advice as well, I'd do that also.

Thanks for the feedback. I have no experience with the 200 at ALL. It seems like a really good little engine though. It may just be that I need to put the can of seafoam in it and wind it out some. Plus I am sure that the temperature drop outside hasn't helped a whole lot. Other than that the car is a cherry...pony interior, etc. I just need to get the smoothness sorted out and pick up a driver side seat rail. It's not fun to try to get up to speed when the driver seat keeps tipping backwards

Yea those I-6's I've heard are a pretty durable engine overall. I'm keeping mine in my 68 coupe and plan on putting a lot of miles on it this summer. There's guys on here that can fill you in better than I if you wanted to modify that engine in the future for more power and what you could expect to get HP and torque wise from it.
Here's a link I had saved, it's a 66 coupe, I6 souped up, good article and pics.

Edit: Also here's another I6 site http://www.fordsix.com/

Well, I figured out the problem, and you will all probably say duh....The rubber hose that comes off my air cleaner intake was missing. It connects to a vacuum beneath it. When I plugged it off, the car just purred... Anyone tell me why it is beneficial to route it back up to the air cleaner rather than just plugging it? It seems it wouldn't help any to send very hot air back into the intake.

Glad you found the problem -- a vacuum leak will do that to you! If you're talking about the hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake, that's the PCV line. It basically evacuates gases that build up in the crankcase back into the intake stream to get rid of them.

Enjoy your 6-banger! It's a great little engine. They're so inherently well-balanced that they just hum along as smooth as silk and last forever. Everyone here pretty much equates me with modern restomods with fuel-injected V8s, but my daily driver? A '66 coupe with a 200 cid 6! I love it to death and would trust it to take me to the ends of the earth.

Great!

Yah that is the one I was talking about. It seemed odd to me that hot air would be filtered back through to the intake....is it better to have it hooked up or plugged off?

Leave it hooked up. You yourself said that the car just purred with it on!
