Question: Installing new engine, what to do with the Computer?

In 3 weeks im going to install a new engine with an E303 cam, GT40X heads, 30 lb injectors, Cobra intake, 70 mm throttle body and 73 mm mass air. I know the stock computer will work but not give me the optimum performance the engine can handle. What custom computer tunes are recommended for this application. Horsepower wise im looking at around 340-350.

If you're asking for an off the shelf, one size fits all, chip then you're not going to find one.

Call around to dyno shops in your area and check prices for chip and tune. Expect to pay 5 or 6 hundred for the initial (hardware and tune) and approx a hundred for each subsequent tune.

Your set up won't do much more if even 280rwhp. I would NOT invest in a chip at that level. You can always buy a tuning device like a tweecer or a pms and tune on the dyno (or tune on the street with a datalogging wideband like I do)

I'm helping him install it and Diablo was the first recommendation from the dealer.

Does Diablo even have a setup for an EECIV??

It's my understanding that Diablo only makes flash tuners for OBDII cars (99+).

I've already talked to someone at Diablo. He needs info/spec for the engine and whatever bolt on's that have been done, and they will send us a pcm chip. My main concern was if anyone has ever dealt with this company. He told me it would be $250 and take a couple days for the build. Now i know this is not the best way to go, cause nobody can just make a chip that will give ultimate results without using a dyno, but at least this way we will be getting close to correct operating conditions by providing Cam specs and T/B size and so on, so the computer will give the right amount of fuel when needed.

That's $250 down the tubes. It's like putting a cam in your car that you just found out in the middle of the street with no clue what it is or where it came from.

This is what i hate about most forums, retards like you.....

I didnt ask for a smart remark, simply for a straight foward answer from anyone whos has any knoledge on Diablo chips. Obviously you have none.... just too much time to waste Stangnets server space with useless comments.

You don't have a clue do you? That IS a direct answer. Mail order ECU chips are junk. If you'd like to question whether or not I know what I'm talking about, I would suggest that you go back through my posts and actually gauge that assumption. With a whopping 4 posts, you've not been around long enough to make that determination.

If you'd like to talk about wasting space then I'd like to bring up the lack of necessity for posting this thread in the first place. Had you performed a search of the forum, you'd likely have your answer already.

Ditto what Dagger said. Every car is different and since these cars are so old, it's even more evident that you can't just take the specs on the cam and throttle body and figure out how much fuel is needed. In addition, most of the time, mail order chips don't do anything other than advance your timing and maybe add some fuel. They can't make a custom fuel curve without a wideband. Thats like saying 10 people with the same height and weight can wear all the same clothes.....

I have had plenty of friends that have had sucess with mail order chips, from chevy impalas to chevy pick-ups and so on. Both of them called the companies direct and told them what they were running and they made the adjustments, reflashed the computers and sent them back. They made a difference.....track proven. My main concern is the extra lift from the cam, now if i gave them those specs why couldn't they make the proper adjustments for fuel curves? Not looking for a full on tune, just something to compensate for the extra lift.

Oh and i forgot that post count = intelligence..... sorry

Again just looking for a answer for someone with experince with Diablo, not other companies. The initial thread was started for suggestions on computer tunes, and Diablo came recommend. I understand the correct way is to dyno tune, that is always the optimum way to go. In this case we are looking for a moderate fix untill that point, and to see if anyone knows about one.

Yes. There is not enough gain to justify the cost, IMO, until you either stroker the motor, or have a power adder of some sort. Running a H/C/I 302 shouldn't require a tune unless you have such a radical combo that it causes driveabililty problems. I dont think you are there yet so i would wait. Why spend $300 on a chip now, when in a year you might throw a power adder into the mix, and then you'll need a $600 dyno tune? I would just play around with the timing and fuel pressure if you want to make some adjustments and see what feels the best.
