Hollowing Cats Vs. An O/R X

Hello Folks.

Two quick questions.

-Noob Alert-
1.) When you remove a cat, what goes in its place? Does a pipe just slip over it and clamp on? or is there some type of modification you need to do?
-/Noob Alert-

2.)And does anyone live in a state with a strict inspection (Visual and/or Emission) where they have had issues with removing one or all sets of cats on thier 199x ponys?

1. People tend to buy an off-road midpipe and swap the whole thing out and sometimes back on (see your question #2).

2. I don't, but many states do have regs against off-road setups (no cats).

Notes: They didnt put my car on the huffer for inspection (Year bracket?)

I wouldn't recommend it and you would be ruining an expensive OEM piece that you may someday need.

Ok well i saw this and i figured why start a new thread. Ill just post my question here. I have a set of stock cats for the 99-04 mustang GT's my friend just bought a 99 and wants it to be louder. So instead of ruining his cats we were going to take the set i had their and just empty them out and put them on his car and keep his cats for whenever he might need them. Now my question is would this trip any check engine lights on his car? because i know it would on mine. Thanks for the help.:SNSign:

yea youd be better off by just buying a whole new offroad midpipe and being able to replace it with your stock midpipe (with the cats) when you need to get it inspected. Thats what i do atleast...

Cats arent cheap either, so hollowing them out would be a big waste of over 100$ if you ever needed to put them on again because of inspection

Alrighty. O/R X Pipe heard. I was quoted $250.00 Parts cost for a Flowtec X for my baby. Anyone have a better idea/ Sugestion. Im not exactly sure how brand can make a diffrence in a basicly straight application but who knows.

Someone let me know thier perfered brand please.

After some light searching Im finding the magic 200. Jegs has an "X" for only 170... True X is the question?

Ok seeing as nobody answered my question I will take it upon myself to ask again incase nobody saw me post since I drive a 6, lol. Ok well I was given a brand new H-pipe for FREE, I never used it since it doesnt work for my car. Its the factory H-pipe, and well my buddy who just got a 99 GT mustang wants a little more sound and pick up so we have another friend with a shop who will hollow out the cats for FREE and we will put the H-pipe on his car ourselves, so we are going to keep the other H-pipe on his car right now since its got its cats and all. So now what my question is, will hollowing the cats trip the check engine light on his 99 Mustang GT, as far as i know it would on mine since my o2 sensors are after the cats but i have noticed that the rear o2 sensors on these GT's are before cats. So again would hollowing the cats on a 99 Mustang GT trip the check engine light?

So in other words since the rear o2 sensors dont see a change in catalytic emissions then the CEL wont turn on right? lol Excuse my knowledge on the GT's hence I dont own one, I own a 6 and all my knowledge is on those engines .

No. The engine light comes on because it needs to sence some change between whats outputed and the change due to the cats. If it doesnt sence that it will give you the listed issues.

I would have said just hook up a programer and set the code to ignore but I didnt know that on Mod motors it did this, I have only experienced choppy idle with 5.0's and crappy 02's. I myself am a intermediate 5.0 Knowledge guy myself, so Im learning as I go with this forum.

Ok well it just doesnt make sense. If I were to empty the Catalytics after the rear o2 sensors why would that trip the CEL? Plus I do know that its OBD-II, but I have friends that have emptied the cat's on a 96 Cobra, and a 98 Cobra, and no problems at all. And no they did not tune it after. So once again i dont see why if i just emptied the cats after the o2 sensors why it would deciede it would have to flip the CEL? Not trying to be a pain just trying to figure this out.

i hollowed my cats and it sounded horrible,just buy the midpipe and save your oem stuff,plus it is a pain to cut gut and weld the stuff back together,i speak from experience on this one,DONT do it
