Raced a WS6 in '05 Stang

WS6 comes up behind at the stop lights and revs engine. Then we start onto highway where he pulls up beside me. About 60 revs and looks over smiling. Now I can't punch it from where I am because of a car up front so I get behind him and come up on the other side of him. About even with him I gun it and never let up knowing at these speeds he can overpower me. I notice when I am going around him he has thin tires on the front. Not sure if he was running slicks with em, but I am assuming the car is set up for dragging. He tried like hell to catch me but mainly stayed even at about 4 car lengths behind me. Near the end when we hit about 125ish he slowly closed the gap to about 2 car lengths but then at 130 just gave up. He either ran out of gears or decided it was too fast for the highway. Which is good I have kids and it was time to slow her down. My wife was like Jesus, ok we got him, let up.

No, just wife. Kids were at the babysitter. I actually had no idea we were doing that fast until it was over. I knew we were somewhere above 100 towards the end. Are you kidding we take the Camry with the kids. You ever try to get an infant car seat and a toddler seat in a Mustang, LOL! We did it one time to cruise in the Stang but its a pain to switch everything out. And I never speed with my baby or kids in the car.

I was saying I have no business driving that fast since we have 2 kids.

I have always tried to be safe with any fast driving. The highway I was on is a 5 lane highway on one side, very straight. I have a better chance of getting a ticket than wrecking. Now I realize anything can go wrong at those speeds. But I guess I can just retire myself to a station wagon and live out my boring little safe life. I think I am old enough to make these decisions by now. I never expected to be read the 5th on the Mustang forums full of modded fast driving mustang owners. I have seen kids who try to race me drive a lot more dangerously at just 80 to 100 miles per hour. I promptly let my foot off the gas and let them go. I'm not dying to race em.
Even the time I took my Z28 to 160 I did it on a long strectch of open highway that is not very busy.

Although on another note my wife and I did discuss that I would probably not be returning to those speeds. I just wanted to race one of those Trans AMs to see what it was like.

it amazing how much power is really needed to overhaul a car that get the jump. If you jumped him by a couple of seconds (which would be about right for 4 car lenghts or so) he would have to out drag you by at least 2 seconds just to keep up. This is largly due to inerita. So the fact that he kept it even is probably credit to the car. As you probably only raced for 12-15 seconds, he would have spent much of it in catch up before being able to reel you in.

But it is just proof that the most powerful car doesn't always win. You where out in front and kept them bihind you, so all credit to the Stang!

Actually in the quarter a tenth of a second is a car length. I actually got about 1/2 (~.4 seconds) a second jump on him. We were even when he gunned it and the car started to lurch forward, but the inertia was already kicking in on my side.

I know in stop light tagging it can be almost impossible to catch a near powerful car that gunned it from the go, but you were waiting to see if they were actually gonna bite. Also I find it hard to do RPM cluth dumps with a normal stop light. You don't get a yellow light on the tree, chuckle.

Shut up fatty....if you're a good driver there is no reason why you can't safely take it that speed in the right conditions i.e (low traffic, no pedestrians, clear path, good weather.)

That is a ridiculous argument. Public highways (and driving habits) are not built to accommodate those speeds. You have no idea what fellow drivers are going to do. Throw in the odd pothole, deer, or stupid driver that might be out there (outside of your control) and it spells disaster. Keep racing on the track.

Of course the chance of getting in a wreck rises the faster you go but you can't honestly say that if there is low/no traffic and you got a huge stretch of highway that is highly dangerous to travel at that speed?

I mean why not take it a step further and say we shouldn't drive because there are too many things that "could" go wrong

When did everyone become so politically correct? Street racing has been around forever, and will probably be here for a long time to come. Maybe everyone should be driving some econobox that goes from 0-60 in 20 seconds.

It is not just a matter of getting in a wreck. The potential for deadly results grows exponentially the faster you go. A mistake at 60-80 mph could be recoverable vs 100+ = no chance. The track is safer and more reliable. Why not use it?

No, I'm not trading in my GT. But you have to consider that in the "golden age of muscle cars" the fastest cars rarely broke into 13's in stock trim. an '05 Mustang GT will smoke a '67 Shelby in every aspect. The cars are faster, and although safety devices have gotten substantially better, running at the speeds mentioned before is still inherently dangerous.
Someone posted an article from Automobile magazine that demonstrated my point really well. It asked whether or not you would give your 16 yr old a new six cylinder Mustang. (Of course, its "Only a six")Then it asked the same for a '84 Corvette. Hardly anyone would trust a 16 yr old with a 'vette! Yet the HP and performance ratings for the cars were very similar.
Just go to the track. It is safer for everyone and there are people there that can help you improve your driving. I've never gotten any pointers on the street.

It's funny when you talk to the the older crowd how they say back in my day when cars were real fast. But if you look up the performance specs on cars like the GTO they aren't all that impressive by todays standards. I think the big difference is almost all cars back then had V8s so just about any car had enough torque and horsepower to do 100+ mph easy. Plus older cars typically have very loud exhausts which make them sound faster.

A 200 hp V6 is too much car for a 16 year old. Now granted an 84 Vette scares me more, but it probably has a much higher top speed. I am a fairly intelligent individual, but I still drove like an idiot at 16. My first fast car was a Z28 at 21 and I still did some stupid stuff. But at 16 with my Pontiac Sunbird I did some plain just insane stuff.

I think that is a lot of the reason the modded Civics are so popular. Parents feel better buying their kids a 4 banger. Its trendy and they spend all their money buying things like a wing

There are some pretty ignorant comments in this thread, so maybe I can play(or actually tell you my true feelings since I am one of them) the devils advocate for the "kids" who drive mustangs. Yes, I am just about to turn 18. Yes, I have a GT. Yes, I payed for it with my own money(horrible Slip and Fall Accident when I was younger), along with insurance, and every gas fill up of my great 13.5mpg here in NYC. Yes, I got a full scholarship to my college I want to attend so why not buy the car of my dreams.

Now, While it is true MOST 16 year olds you see driving cars, or modded cars cannot truly handle them the way a person with 15 years of driving experience can. But, please do not say that for all of us. I am by far not saying I am a better driver then any of you, but my father who was in NYPD Highway Patrol for 25 years has taught me every aspect of driving, the same as they taught him in the classroom. This was all before I even touched a gas pedal. So, while it is true alot of "kids" go crazy, cause accidents, and risk the chance on killing themselves and others there are also alot who dont.

True, I have raced my GT on the street before but only on roads we know are deserted late at night where there are no people driving or walking, and which are perfectly smooth. I guess its a little wierd to say we have an almost perfect strip but its really true. So, if you think im 18 and in my GT burning rubber at every stop light pedal to the metal you are wrong, since im terrified of even harming my baby. Ive driven cars 3 times the value of my mustang and have been driving for nearly 2 years.. no accidents, no fender benders, no tickets, guess thats pretty good on your "kids" standards.

Not trying to stir the pot or get on anyones nerves, just showing you to not put us all in 1 big group, since its not fair. Thanks and be safe as always

I'm in the same boat... 18 yrs old w/a GT (My Daddy bought it for me for never doing drugs/alcohol/smoking and keeping my grades up til I was 18) Yes, I have street raced before. Yes, a lot of kids are terrible drivers...but some are actually pretty good! Not me in particular, but my dad raced in the IMSA series and taught/teaching me everything he knows (I do my best!)...BUT, I know plenty of teens who are great drivers on their own too

And from What I've read in this thread and others, Adults street race too (or break the speed limit from time to time) So its not JUST neglegent (sp?) teenage drivers trying to get their rocks off...

I had a 1970 Buick GSX when I got my license. I should never have driven a car as fast as that when I was so young. Teenagers are just too impulsive, especially these days; and too desensitized. Teenagers these days think when you die, you just start over in your bedroom or garage. No sense of reality or remorse due to video games. Then throw in a super horney 16 year old boy who trying to show off and someone is going to get killed.

Teenagers are friggin retarded; they should have IQ tests and be bonded before they are allowed behind the wheel of a car. They should also never be allowed out after 9pm or during rush hour traffic. As a matter of fact, I should by law have the right to kick the **** out of anyone I see under the age of 21. Almost no one in this world can drive worth a damn. I get so pissed off just driving down the street to the gas station. People just cut on into lanes with no signal, ****s in their 118hp civics flying around town like they own the place, cool kids in their mom's BMW flying down the street. Its just ridiculous seeing these kids think by driving fast their car is fast. Almost any car can get to 90mph idiots. Doesn't make your rice rocket any faster than my Ranger. If it can be beat by a stock Ranger then it doesn't deserve to be on the road.

I also hate how they rice out Mustangs. Can't put euro lights on an american muscle car, people! Kind of a car oxymoron. Bottom line is: People are ****ing stupid in and with vehicles.
