Just wondering if anyone would be interested in a product like this.

A budget rack and pinion steering system for classic mustangs that doesn't cost you 1300!!

That would have a new crossmember that bolts in the stock location and the rack and pinion mounts to it. You can also use the stock steering column.

Let me know what you think.

Thank you!! :SNSign:

And...

has better than 7" of rack movement, and the cross member has tabs that support the LCA mounts, and clears headers/clutch linkage, and sits nice and tight to the oil pan, and doesn't induce bump steer, and uses a stock power steering pump/hoses, and has extremely limited flex, and has 3.25 turns lock to lock, and uses new (not rebuilt) components, and uses the stock inner V8 tie rod ends, and the rack unit itself is a non-modified easily replaceable unit.

Yeah, I'd be interested enough to change from the rack I have now.

***************edit
At that point I wouldn't care if it wasn't "Budget".

We had MANY long, deep technical threads on this a few years ago, when I developed my system on the 69, HAKEN was doing his, plus a few others. Hit the archives, find those threads, they are FULL of all the critical information you will need.

I'd like to see a "kit" which will allow you to bolt in an SN rack. You can pick those racks up really cheap and they much better then my box!

Just a thought....oh and BTW, I'm really interested.

When I did mine, there was so much to take into account. Front Vs Rear steer, Bump steer, mounting, steering column interface, exhaust & clutch clearance, turning radius, lots.

In most cases, the turning radius is increased, and bump-steer is also increased. That's by the uber-expensive kits work, they are custom designed to match the Mustang suspension.

Try these threads...

This one is the GOOD thread, read it all the way through...

Just a second thought on the SN rack, isn't it Front steer? Our classic Ponies are rear steer.

I'm with C-8.....will be interested to see some data. The technical issues are well-known and must be dealt with.

Till then, the 'cheap R&P' is kinda like the 100-mpg carb

can't happen, the SN95 racks are front steer and the early mustangs are rear steer. the only way to do it would be to use some kind steering "reverser" that makes the rack turn the opposite way of the input from the steering wheel and any such system would add unnecessary complications and expense not to mention more moving parts to fail.
