Radar Detectors

we install k-40's at work that mount in the front and rear liscense plate frame. they are like $1200 installed and come with a garuntee that if you get a ticket they will pay it. pretty cool, but i think the message our patrol buddies are tryin to tell us is don't speed. just come out to silver state with me in sept and you can go 145 mph on open raod for 90 miles, legally!!! next year 165, oh yeah!

I guess it doesn't hold true anymore but I thought I heard a while back that cop cars have to be marked to be able to stop people.
I was watching a show on tv a while back that some people were buying crown vics and impalas ect. to impersonate unmarked cop cars and where intimidating other drivers on the road.

No they are not required to be marked at all in my state. That black camaro is a unmarked patrol car in my county and believe me he stops cars all the time.

Do you know if any of the East Coast NC cops use the laser setup or if they're all still in radar? I'll be coming down Rt. 13 to the Bay Bridge and down into Carolina that way.

I am not aware of any laser devices in use in north carolina and I know that SHP is not using them.

I have the best radar dector in the world, its called keeping your foot off the right pedal and it was free.

pretty much, whats the point of sepnding $400 on a V1 when they sit there w/ there radar off and the only reason the dector picks it up is b/c there radar/laser has already bounced off your car once they flip the switch to turn it on and sent your speed back to the gun.

But who wants to drive 8 hours if you can make it in 6.5 (doing 15-20 over the entire trip). Now tell me you've never done 75 in a 55.

everyone has done it, doing it on a reg basis w/ our w/ out a radar dector is not a good idea. If its a one time deal then the chances are not as high.

Theres another thing called the gut feeling. Some people have it and some dont and you can just sense when your going to see a cop. Last night when I left work I 100% knew I was going to see a cop on the way home. Not only did I see A cop I saw #1 Local cop, #2 County Cop, #3 Second county cop, #4 State trooper. Needless to say I had the chance of getting nailed 4 times on the way home last night but I was doing the speed limit or no more then 5 MPH over and I was fine. This was all within a 30 min trip home.

I just fine it funny when people put alot of faith in radar dectors b/c nothing is 100% effective from getting pulled over more then just going the speed limit.

#1. Spend $200( or more) on a decent radar dector

#2. End up getting a nice $100 + ticket.

#3. Paying for the increased Insurance rates b/c if it.

Now if thats not total ownage I dont know what is. Dosent make saving that 15 extra mins by speeding worth it awhole lot after that.

well they dont help too much when your the only one speeding, it can detect the radar of the cops clocking people in front of you which lets you know to slow down, so it does in fact help you out... I'm getting close to 19yrs old and im on ticket number 2, both times i didnt know i was speeding. i was in my mustang the first time and my laser dectector went off and i knew i was done for. the second time i was in my moms expedition on the way home from the track(thats right, i raced it) and it went from 55 to 35 and i didnt see the 35 mph sign and got a ticket. the increased insurance rates havent hit me yet, but for all the times that radar detector has saved my ass its well worth its money, and i feel naked without it too.

I just dont speed, and its fine. The most i do is 5-6 over, and i've never been pulled over. I've had cops flash their lights, i guess to signal me to slow down some, but never been pulled over.

I think about the only thing that was good was the bear detector it picked up the cops 2 way computer sig. The Staters out here use Laser or atleast I'm pretty sure they do. I have only been pulled over once by Laser and i was the only on on the road at night couldn't even see him weather I had a Detector or not who knows weather it would have worked. I myself think its pointless to speed I grew out of that stage was cool for a while until I got 3 speeding tickets LOL not all at once but still 3 too many. If I want to go fast I'll go to the track where its legal lol and for about the same price maybe less than a speeding ticket. From what Radartest.com says the Escort 8500 is the best out of the Detectors. If I ever get one I'll go eBay and find a cheap one. What I really want is a GTech Pro SS now that's worth it :-D

Your opening sentence is contradictory to your '#1'. A "decent" radar detector is reliable. And, infact, if you read what kind I bought or did any kind of research on them and what they can save you from, you would know that I bought one of the BEST radar detectors on the market, and by far the best for the dollar.

Automobile magazine said: "The Valentine (supposedly "the best") was trounced by the Escort model in Ka-Band, which is growing in popularity."

As I found out today, cops use the Ka band.

Motor Trend said, "In the over-$200 catergory of high-end radar/laser detectors, the nod goes to the Passport 8500."

And....quite possibly the most reliable source...

I also noticed today, that if I read the box, I would have saw in very LARGE bold letters - "Radar & Laser Detector".

Things that make you go "hmmmm."

I speed allways. On side roads where the speed is 60 (KMPH NOT MILES) I do at least 80. On the highway in 80 zone I do a good 110 at least.

We all speed a little bit!

I have never used a radar/laser detector, nor would I. I drive withing the flow of traffic. That is to say in Southern Ontario on our 400 series highways where 100 km/hr is max = 63 mph. Its offen we find ourselves zipping along at 120 km/hr = 74.5 MPH and are not often stopped. I often had people pass me doing much faster 140 km/hr which is 87 MPH or better.

Yes I have been nabbed but not in a long time in Canada anyways! The USA however seams to like Canadian Plates, just gotta love the SHP guys who sit at the bottom of a large hill that you can coast down and break the speed limit, like in PA, VA, WVA. Not nice!

In maine 30MPH and over will get you crimminal speeding and prob a loss of your licence and a nice heafty fine to go along w/ it.

You dont even have to do 30 over to be considered criminal here. You can be doing 15 over, but if you are changing lanes in and out of traffic you can be charged with reckless driving. The officer just has to prove why he thought you were driving reckless.

I wish!!! I just got a ticket last week while using 1 of those, i had no warning at all! and it was radar, not laser, thanks a lot valentin 1! $400 crap that probably functions no better than an $80 one.
