I have a 98GT and I want to replace the stock headunit (Mach 460) with a Kenwood one. I know that I need the wiring harness to attach the wires from the stock wiring to the headunit's.

Do I need a special connector that bypasses the factory amp?

The only speakers that will work without the amp are the tweeters, the ones on the upper door and the two in the back. The 6 3/4 will only play off the amp and they will sound horrible with the kenwood. You will need to rewire the speakers straight to the deck instead of through the amps.

I've got a 98 that had the 460. I replaced my factory deck with a Kenwood MP3 player. It didn't sound bad at all. It was a huge improvement over the 460 deck. I had it with factory speaks and the amps for a year or so before I rewired the whole thing, which is a mess.

Anyways, just get the wiring harness adapter from Wal-Mart or Best Buy, forget the audio shop, they'll overcharge you unless you know someone that works there.
