Im not too good on sound stuff but, sounds like maybe a connection came loose after you got finished driving it around. I would fiddle with some of the wires that connect your speakers to your head unit and see what happens.

So you bought it used I'm guessing. Check your wiring connections. If that doesn't help, then something inside the head unit is bad.

That's still 50 bucks wasted, probably why the guy unloaded it cheaply. The CAS really is just plain ole crap. I searched hi and lo until I found a vintage kenwwod unit (the one they knock off now) it was worth the extra time.

I bought one of these for my Dad's 67 coupe a few years back. He had so many problems with it. I hope the best for you and the radio works out. Unfortunately with their track record, $50 is not the greatest bargain for a non-working radio. Good luck.

the radio is great but i figured out the problem, i ran wires for my speakers thats coin pretty soon (ordered em) and they grounded themselves to the frame! so that muted all the speakers..for 50 bux its a killer radio cause you cant ffind them to fit in the what is it...4 inch hole? i didnt wanna chop it up so this was a deal to me

You did allright. you paid what it's actually worth. Hopefully it will last but the odds are against it. The Kenwood models out there are about $85 un modified.
The the non Kenwood CAS stuff is way overpriced flea market quality stuff.

I've got a Kenwood one for sale on Ebay right now. Not a CAS but Ken Harrison. It was unusable in the Arizona heat. The longer it played (hotter) the worse it sounded. And a pre set button quit. They repaired it and claimed no problem found on the thermal issue.

I've got an Alpine in the glove box now

They must sell a ton of that crap.. They make it for every old car & it's being sold all over. I wonder what the deal is. All of these forums HATE these radios.. What's the solution? Maybe we should try & get a rep from there come on this site to talk about it.

I bought a new radio bezel for my '69 to see if I can modify it for the new DIN radios, but now I find out that they're longer than the old radios too so they stick out of the dash.

Does anyone make a secret radio OTHER than custom auto sound?

I don't know how much depth you're lacking, but there are installation depth spacers available. A good auto sound shop should have something. I used something like that to make a mount in my glove box. You can see it here:

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=494743
http://forums.stangnet.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27596

Other choices just aren't there. I looked a lot before I settled on the Ken Harrison/Kenwood unit. I wasn't about to buy anymore CAS stuff after the experience I had with the one in my 62 Chevy truck. Total crap! Replaced it with an Alpine under the dash. I did find this while looking for Mustang units:
http://johnsmustang.com/Catalog-2446.html
Jensen is probably about the same as Kenwood when it comes to car audio though. Who knows? I was done with digging in the dash. Put the AM back in and a real peice of equipment in the glove box.

I think it may be that the electronics of the shaft mount technology of yesteryear just can't be made to sound as good as todays stuff. But on the other hand I did have decent sounding Pioneer units in the old days. I guess the demand for quality in those applications just isn't there anymore. CAS has a niche and apparently can sell modified swap mart Chinese crap at inflated prices. And the auto hobbiests pay. It won't get better unless we create the demand.

John's is where I got my hands on the Ken Harrison Kenwood model as well. No complaints. It's certainly not the best ever, but I'd say about the best in it's class. Besides, without top of the line speakers, having the top down most of the time and running glass paks, a true and clear unit would be a waste for me anyway. The Sony disc changer I bought works great with the unit as well.

There are non mod alternatives now a days though if money is not issue. I think it's both Alpine and Blaupunkt that are available from many places included with a custom bezel so it bolts right up with no cutting and adjusts for that extra depth as well. I passed on them simply because I felt it was too mod looking for my other wise stock appearing interior. Besides, the less than perfect quality makes it sound more authentic to me, just like a little orange peel in the paint makes it look more factory than a perfect "like glass" appearance would.

Be sure you check you grounds for the head unit and conections to the speakers. I've had my CAS set up for nearly 10 years and there has been no problem. It is all Kenwood.

i've got me a blaupunkt under the dash..i like it there i get to keep the stock apearence of my am radio, and if i want i can re route the wires back into the glove box ( used to be in there ) so it looks all lovely and stock...i do miss my fuzzy dice though...RIP.

That may be the case and you are a lucky one indeed, but I'm pretty sure the CAS is not Kenwood, it is a knockoff.
