I keep reading stories online how these are one of the worst cars ever...Now Im ok with the quality problems, but when they start on the body style I have to object. The look of the Cobra with the effects can't be beat as one of the greatest looks of the time.

Motor trend car of the year,
2nd best mustang selling body style behind 64-66
Little Lincoln Ride - efforts for reducing NVH (noise vibration harshness)
Lots better quality control then the 64-73

All the old timers remember the hate for this car which was based on a few things;

Cons

No V8 the first year
No convertible
Redheaded step child naming with Mustang “II"
Carroll Shelby lawsuit over Cobra II Name
No engine upgrades for Cobra II

Cobra II stickers on 4cyl and 6 cylinder cars
Sticker packages installed by dealers
Oil embargo Timing

Along with the oil embargo and attempts at increasing fuel mileage, they also had to contend with stricter EPA rules/laws - so it was the beginning of choked off engine designs and emissions controls that robbed power.

According to Lee Iaccoca's book, the Mustang was DEAD after the introduction of the 71/73 Mustang's. Biggest complaint was the size. While holding a stockholders meeting a women, a VERY large stock holder, asked why they killed the Mustang with "this boat" . She explained how she and her friends "loved" the first Mustang. After a while Iacocca invited her and some friends to view the new Mustang. They asked her to walk in, look over the "new" design and tell them what she thought. She went in. looked, turned around and said "I will take one for me and one for my daughter". The Mustang II was approved.. In Lee's book.
