Yup, looks like its still there. Wow, must've been a faulty C-clip then. You'll need to remove this pin to install the new C-clip. Sould be a really quick fix if nothing else got damaged. Just make sure to insect all of the gear tooth faces really well to make sure there was no other damage caused by the debris.

rotate the gears some there should be a bolt that goes through it take that out and hit the pin in, not all the way, then rotate gear then pull the metal shaft out.

Yea, its there. Looks like all you need is another c-clip. Id take the carrier out and check everything just to make sure though. Its just the 4 bolts. But make sure you remember what side everything was on or you could **** up the wear pattern of the gears.

Im assuming thats what it was.

And for future reference. Just undo all the bolts except the top one. Then with a pan under it pop it open with a screwdriver. Alot less messy.

No, not the S-Clip. Just the pinion shaft. Turn the carrier till you see a small bolt on it. I think its an 8MM and take that out. Then you can slide the pinion shaft out. Replace c-clip, pop in pinion shaft, do burnout.

Good thing these cars have disk brakes, I recall seeing cars with drum brakes lose the entire wheel and axle when something like this happens. That would have been way more expensive.

Push the remaining axle in, and take the c-clip off. Then make sure the vehicle is in neutral, and you can turn the whole carrier at once.

EDIT: You could actually do it without removing the axle. Just unhook the 4 bolts holding the driveshaft to the rearend.

Well it got a little more difficult. but not bad. Just put the small gears back in and turn the bigger gears so that the two small gears are directly across from each other and put the shaft back in after you do the clips.

make sure when your done that you put new fluid back into the diff.

to put the
c clips in push the axles all the way in then you will see where to put the c clip in( use needle nose pliers. As you get one in pull the axle out then do the other side the put the pinion shaft back in followed by the bolt.

Just for your information...

The C clip is what prevents the axle from coming out of the differential. They are removed by removing the carrier pin retaining bolt, carrier pin, and then sliding the axle IN towards the center of the car. Usually you must also remove the rear ABS sensor out near the end of the axle as it prevents the axle from being pushed in far enough to get the C clip in or out. BE CAREFUL with these as 80% of the time people break them trying to get them out as they tend to gaul up. They are held in place with a little hex head (if I remember correctly) bolt. You will also have to remove the bracket caliper and disc. Once the brake caliper, brake disc, ABS sensor, carrier retaining bolt, and carrier pin are removed the axle can be pushed in towards the center of the car and using a magnet the C clip can be removed. Once its removed the axle can then be pulled from the car. The rear disc brakes are all that saved you from a what could have been a catstrophic failure where the wheel/tire/axle assembly as a whole exited the car at speed. Its not a pretty site!
