rear axles spin in opp. directions

i had a leak at my driveshaft seals, so i took it out to fix.
After reinstalling the driveshaft, i cant move my car forward bc the axles are spinnning in opposite directions.
What did i do that could have caused this??

Put a potato in your left tailpipe, then crank the car while steering left. If the radio goes to 99.5FM, it means you installed your valve stem counter-clockwise.

don't forget that the piston return springs could have broken and locked up the motor.

OK, guys. time to quit pulling his leg. You did nothing wrong. Only found out the differential is an "open type" No posi for you.

Thanks for ruining the fun D.

I was going to tell him he'd accidentally flipped the reverser switch in the pumpkin and he needed to completely dissasemble the axle to reset it.

That's not strange, just plain sad.

Seriously though, the first time you see an open type diff go in opposite directions, it's completely counter intuitive. You'd think open would meant one would spin and the other would not...

I would. You have to realize it's been about 16 years since the last carbed car came off the assembly line. And that was a Police package. Last regular use was 20 years ago. Lots of members here that aren't even that old yet.

I first encountered this when I was 16 with my first Mustang. I was baffled when I rotated the rear end and saw the tires spin in opposite directions!!!

I don't know if this was a serious post or not, but we learn these things by experience and asking questions.

I can understand how some people don't know such basic things. They've never had anybody to show them. The ones of us who were bitten by the car bug at a young age found out for ourselves (sometimes with help from others) what makes these things tick. Some of us did it out of neccessity because we had to keep our car running just to have transportation. I had a high school teacher many years ago that said, "If you ain't ever, you don't know."

About two years ago I went for a job interview. When I walked in there was a clock with sweeping hands. The interviewer said for me to write my name and the time on a piece of paper. He told me that I'd be surprised at the young people that couldn't read a clock with sweeping hands. I'm sure that they could learn but were so used to the digital clocks.

I think he was trying to pull our leg because why does his car not move forward now? Maybe he forgot to take it out of gear, haha.

I had the same problem one time. I found out that my distributor shaft went into the water pump. Look at the front of the engine, does the distributor entend to the water pump? If so the only cure would put a chevy engine in the car.

i could see how someone might think that if they had an LT-1 chevy motor.
