just took my '99 vert to check about an oil leak (small) and a burning oil smell and was told that the rear main seal has to be changed. i didnt think it would be so costly but was wondering what this repair usually costs. any quotes or suggestions would help tremendously.

If I were to do it in my shop, the price of the part it self would be around $29.99. Labor would be 4.7 hours for a manual tranny and 6.1 for an auto plus the price of an oil change. I charge $80 an hour for labor.

Hope that helps.

this shop is telling me that it is 27 hrs of labor and seeing that they have to pull the motor out half way and the milage (127K) he suggested replacing the timing chain. i just dont see how it takes that long to pull the motor??? his quote was $3800!!!

That is crazy retarded. What the hell are they going to do for 27 hours of work, manufacture the rubber for the seal themselves by hand???

Like stated about id say around the 4 to 6 hour range and depending on the shop and area, id expect anywhere from $300-$600 total. Most good shops are atleast $60 hr and on up to $80 or so, again obviously depends on the quality of the shop and the location you live, but here in KY thats about right.

As far as recommendation, the only one id have is to do it yourself but obviously its going to involve dropping the tranny and all the little things involved in it all, which if you've never done it, isn't the most easiest and fastest thing to do.

i just bought a new car 10 days ago and was excited that i could now start tweeking my stang, for years it has been my daily driver and i couldnt afford to have it in the shop for long periods of time. but i wasnt expecting this kind of repair. most shops around here charge around $100/hr for labor. this shop is $110.

Rear main seal job is usually the exact same labor charge as changing a clutch because the same work is involved. A rear main seal replacement should be between $400-$600 including a new clutch and the RMS. Thats how much I paid like 5 years ago before I learned how to pull a tranny myself.
