Is it necessary to jack the rear of the car to remove old rear shocks and install new ones?

Not sure how stiff the new ones are, but i removed my shocks without jacking the car up. Just take the nuts, washers, and rubber off and compress the shock by hand. Worked on my rear shocks anyways.

Wow, I thought getting to them on the ground would be harder than jacking up the car. I guess it can be done, but, I like room to work.
