Has anybody ever done an 8.8 rear swap ? What does it intale ?

8.8 just arrived so I let you know. They say its a bolt in but I am adding the quad shocks which GT's have and while I'm down there I'm replacing the upper & lower control arms (145K so probably needs it).

Also the speedo gear if you go with any ratio other that stock. I'm going to 3.3's

take off, bolt on...not hard at all...but I ask why you are doing it? there are other ways to spend that kind of money, unless you are pushing out crazy hp

Well I am thinking one day down the road I hope to be pushing about 300 horses or so via a procharger. Do you think the stock rear will hold up ?

As an open rear end, it won't work, your going to need at least a Posi unit to be able to make any sort of take off traction.

The 7.5" rear end can take 300 HP/Tq. There's no need to upgrade the whole rear end like that. Just go with some gears and a T-Lok.

Well let me put it this way what are the limitations of a 7.5" rear ? Plus I am kind of a do it right the first time kind of person I would hate to do a killer engine mod and be able to push 300 to the wheels only to blow the rear out.

I don't know guys. If your going to do it yourself the gear swap makes sense, but once you ad the cost of the diff then you're actually better of just changing out the rear end in my opinion. Especially if you're going to have someone do it for you. The rear end is easy enough to change out but with the t-lock unit you have to shim it correctly otherwise you'll chew up your gears. I'm going to the 8.8 because my bearings are going and I can actually upgrade for less than what they want to charge to replace the bearings.

Good point I wonder what the cost difference is of a t-lok install is vs a used 8.8 off of a GT maybe even from a junk yard just out with the old in with the new. I can do the swap myself but I would want the t-lok done by someone who knows. Thats food for thought.

The labor for having my gears, T-Lok, rear axle seals all replaced was $150.

You HAVE TO look around for a shop that does a lot of rear end work. That way, they are experts, do this kind of work all the time, don't take forever doing it, and therefor don't charge you much.

That sound about right but your gears were probably $175.00 and another $300-$400 min for the T-Lok. So that's about $625.00 to $725.00. My rear end was $725.00 & I purchased the the axle install kit ($15.00) + shipping was $862.00 total. I did the labor myself but I also added new upper & lower control arms & quad shocks. Total for everything was about $1,300.00 with all the extras like fluids, etc.

You can go either way, in my situation it made more sense to go with the new rear end because I have 148,000 miles and was pretty sure everything was worn out.

Put the rear in yesterday and man is it sweet. Waiting a few miles before testing the acceleration though to let the gears break in. I got a Ford performance rear end with the 3.73's and the nice part was that the gears are already set-up & shimmed so you don't have to worry about blowing out the gears if there installed poorly.

Ran into one problem though, found out my rear brake calipers are shot. Driver side had one pin locked up and the Passenger was totally locked. On the hunt for new calipers today.

Will the 8.8 from my 95 GT go in OK ona 99 V6 7.5 swap? I have heard that the width is different on the 7.5 and it was longer. I heard 1.5 in" longer on both sides. Am I wrong?

'If I'm not mistaken, any 79 up rears are interchangable. BUT, like was mentioned, there are differences in length. Before you order one, do some calling/searching around for the lengths. i wouldn't just go by everyone's opinions.
