Rebuild or buy new..?

i need to get my tranny in my 94 5.0 AT worked on but they want like $1350-$1370 for a overhaul.. Should i just buy a new one? and if get a new one where and how much??

I would buy new. For a little bit more than that you can get a Tremec or even a World Class T5 which are pretty much bullet proof.

I'd also buy new and would check out lentech and art carr, they are not "that" much more than what your being quoted, but the results will be leaps and bounds better.

www.tccoa.com There is a groupe purchase going on there for bullet proof trannys. You might look into it. Your best bet would be getting a newer 99+ 4r70w/aode and swapping over the few parts needed for your setup. The old pre 97 trannys arnt worth rebuilding.

Let me tell you my experience with automatics and why I now drive sticks.

I had an 88 dakota witha v6. Dad owned it before me and I started driving (beating) on it at 60k miles. Well at 100k niles i was stoplight racing (I know 19 and stupid) the trans went. So I spent about $1500 to have it rebuilt... The guy did an awesome job. but mreo stupidity ensued afterall if it made 100k befor it will make another 100k this time right? Nope. at 130k miles the same thing happened. So i upgraded the transmission from the chrysler A500 to an A518. cost me $1800 installed ($1300 trans, $200 summit non-lockup convertor, $300 install) and I beat that thing all I could. I would do brakestands forever, neutral drops from 5000 rpm. It took all of it.

So either upgrade or pay the price later.

I'll step off my soap box now.

My opinion is different....I talked to a guy who has a local shop in Palm Bch County. He owns a stang and works on tranny's for cars running at Moroso. His shop is an authorized repair shop for Art Carr.

His philosophy is there is NO advantage of a new one over a rebuild, unless the housing itself is bad. The "guts" are what's important, and he says he has seen problems with putting a "foreign" tranny in a car (compatibility and electronics) He said he has had better success with removing the ORIGINAL tranny, putting in new parts, and then reinstalling and testing.

If youre changing to a manual....of course this is irrelevant. I had planned 2 years ago to do my rebuild with them, but the tranny has held up fine since the Vortech went in.

The only thig is in the end it's cheaper to get a newer 4r70w/aode tranny then rebuild the stock 94-95 aode tranny. The 98+ tranny cases are upgraded and stronger, the 98+ trannys have a mech diode, and the 98+ have stronger internal gears. Your best bet you be is to get a 98+ v-6 4r70w/aode then have it rebuilt. You can get them from junk yards for under $200.

Does anyone know anything about www.bieberfever.com? I'm in the same position as Arsonstang, only I was quoted $1,600-$2,000 for my rebuild. The 99+ 4r70w/aode option sounds good, but what do you mean by extra parts that need to be swapped? The reason I ask is because I live in Iowa City, and no shops would touch a T-5 swap, so I'm guessing anyting "extra" might also throw them for a loop.

I have a 94 GT AODE with only 61,XXX miles, I just don't want another rebuild before 100,000.

Buemann is selling NEW 4R70W Windsor patterns for 1300....
Otherwise rebuild it with better parts.

rebuilder kit (seals, gaskets, etc)
rebuilt converter
a l/o selonoid (dont know what that is)
transmission fluid

6 month or 6000 mile warranty





i went there because my brothers 5.0 also had the tranny rebuilt there about 7 years ago and it still shifts great, i know AAMCO offers a lifetime warranty but i dont know what it costs or if its worth it

They didn't add a mech diode? Personaly I think $1200 is a bit much for a rebuild but thats what most places charge. And to rebuild an aode/4r70w is pretty easy and if everything goes good I can do it in a day. But most places charge about $800-1000 in labor to do a stock rebuild.
