I would like to rebuild my 9” third member. So far, I have rebuilt three ford small blocks and one toploader. I have a dial gauge, 150 lb torque wench, and patients. Is this something I could do? I’ve read mixed opinions about taking on this type of project. Please post any first-time or professional experience (or PM me if you like).

Also, I have review this short thread about rebuilding (I do have a shop manual) and some info on the web:

Here's the thread you need to read. Get the video, and you won't be possible to screw it up. Mine's fantastic.

It's on order! Great reviews.

What differential (Trac lok, locker, etc.) did you end up using?

I would have a shop do the final adjustments on the pinion backlash and such and then I would have them make a shim/spacer for you instead of using a crush sleeve. Once you get away from the crush sleeve, you should be able to rebuild it as many times as you want and not have to worry about the setup on the backlash anymore.
